So has anyone played with the Wing yet? I am surprised there is no forum for it yet...
I just got mine and I have to say that while I do like it, I am not sure it is worth the upgrade unless you are experiencing issues with the MDA. For me, I was having some intermittent issues with email and my screen so I figured what the heck.
Overall, it is a slight upgrade from the MDA. Personally, I would have liked to see the TyTn come out from TMobile with the faster Processor but I am pleased with the Wing and it is now my primary device. Working like a charm so far!
What I like:
1: nicer 'feel', won't slip out of your hand, looks cool
2: keyboard has bigger keys and seems easier to type upon
3: WM 6!! (lots of interface improvements)
4: seems to respond faster within calendar, and switching between apps
5: certain registry tweaks no longer needed for keyboard, GPRS indicator, etc
6: works with most of my MDA accessories (except charger stands)
7: microSD slot has a cover (no more accidental ejection of SD card)
8: video capture, voice notes
9: support for HTML email
10: Start button
What I don't like:
1: USB plug slightly off-center so charger stands won't fit it
2: microSD card instead of miniSD (more media to buy)
3: headset is plugged into mini USB (no separate headset plug)
4: no IE button (email button still there)
5: rear 'mono' speaker (no longer a speaker on each side)
Waiting for lvlolvlo to put together a new CAB of registry tweaks for it
My poor MDA will now become my new 'alarm clock' on my night table (AlarmX from MTUX) with Wifi enabled (for the occasional late night/early morning browsing and IM). The torch (or in this case the SIM) has been passed...
Yes, we so need a dedicated WING forum. I just got my WING last night - an upgrade from the world's most problematic HP h6315 so this jump is quite drastic for me.
And I researched a lil' on the HTC Touch prior to this purchase.
My primary complaint on the WING is that this thing is very slow in switching between apps. Also this huge gap between its 2 movable parts is a lil' disturbing. It feels so flimsy. Is this going to hold over time?
I haven't noticed delays switching between applications. Interesting...
This device is the HTC Atlas I believe, not the Touch.
I have used the MDA for a year and a half and it has stood up well. I have dropped it several times (in its case) and it took no damage. So hopefully the Wing will stand up equally well.
after excitedly opening my brand new wing, i've realized that the sliding keyboard is springloaded vs my old MDA where it just slides in and out... so i wanna see how long before the springs wear out since i do a lot of txting..
and there's a big lag when i'm switching apps.. it's a bigger lag than my MDA.. and because of this big lag, when i send txts one after another, i end up sending blank txt cuz of the lag.. w/ the reply & send button... gRRRR..... but i really do like the WM6..
i also agree that there are waaaay too many icons on the today screen.. i'm tempted to follow the previous poster and remove the trayap file.. but i wanna wait and see if anyone else can figure out how to delete just a few of the icons..
and i finally got the internet to work on the wing.. w/ my mda, i couldn't get the internet to work for the life of me, unless i connected off someone's or my own wifi to connect to the internet.. so far, i'm pretty content w/ the wing..
I like it. I've only had it for about 23 hours now and so far I like the WM6. I overclocked it to 299 and it works fine. Although It's not as nice as my old PPC 6700 where I could take it up to 624. I do like the small profile it has though. BUT I just came over from a a black berry pearl and it was a lame phone to easy to use for me. So I have been spending some time trying to find some registry hacks to speed up the phone but I am bit afraid of trying the settings on my own so I'll just wait til someone else figures it out. The camera is nice though. I haven't tried the wifi or BT but I'm sure they work plenty fine.
i have had my wing for about a month or so and its a great phone with some minor twitching between apps. ..the internet seemed too work well until the main memory became low. i had the mda but the screen broke instead of replacing i rather invest in a newer model...on that note anybody know where i can find a mda screen for less than 120 plus tax....i didnt have this many probs with my mda but im also trying out the spb shell program which i love but it seems to drain the battery but is very effecient bigger buttons icons, today screen weather and some sort of "fave fav" speed dialing which is cool...i recently found out that the phone will also read out loud your texts and email headers so you dont have to actually p/u the phone to see who is calling or who is texting, say if your lying in bed and the phone is "way over there"...thats it for now im using the phone as a modem thru internet sharing which is pretty nifty too!
I really have not experienced a real 'lag' when switching between apps. Perhaps it is related to how many apps you all have open at once. I usually do not have more than 3 apps running at the same time. I configured the launcher app to 'close' my app when I click OK rather than minimize so I do not often have a ton of apps running at once.
Can anyone with app switching slowness test out this theory? Because I find that the Wing actually switches between apps faster than my MDA (and I pretty much ran my MDA the same way).
Hmm... I never had any problems getting my MDA to connect to the EDGE network for internet access. It must be how you have the Connections set up...
well when i first got my mda back in december, i dunno what happened, but it couldn't connect.. went to the tmobile store, had them look at it, then call the mda tech dept.. wasted 75mins in that store on hold. and i was like f' it..
so i recently got my wing and initially had the same problem.. but i saw some threads where ppl had the same problem.. so instead of connection w/ wap.voicestream.. i switched from wap to internet2.voicestream and it fixed the problem right up.. i didn't go back to my mda to see if that was the problem, but why can't the tmobile store figure that out!?!?
i was disappointed they didn't have the full AIM client as the sk3 on the new wing.. but i saw a post w/ an old version of AIM, and i'm pretty happy w/ that..
still experiencing lag, but i deleted the OZ client n the wap t-zone program cuz i have the total internet add-on.. so it's a lil faster.. anyone know where i can find the thread for overclocking my wing.. or should i just search the wizard threads...?
wow thanks i finally got the internet and email to work over edge on my wing.....now i want to get rid of that stupid message sent notification which i will be doing as soon as i figure out how to get into the registry lol only had the phone for a day
I have posted a note a couple of months ago with links to resources that talk about all the tweaks and such available for the Wing. I believe the registry hack to stop that message sent is in there.
I have a problem with my Wifi. Initially, it worked but after some while, my internet wireless stopped working. I'm mainly in my house a lot, and my Wifi works on my laptop but for some reason it does not work on my Wing. Are there any resolutions?
Considering purchasing a T-Mobile Wing?, my personal advice…don’t!
This message to anyone that is considering purchasing a T-Mobile Wing, my personal advice…don’t!
The major problem with this MDA is that the END key on the front of the phone is raised and can be easily depressed (the END key is a ½ x ¼ button on the front panel of the phone that is used to end a call or return to the Today screen). This HTC oversight will cause the following annoying situations to occur:
- When using the phone and walking/moving and it is in or out of the supplied T-Mobile carrying case, on your belt buckle, inside any of your pockets, etc…, the END key will randomly depress causing the phone to hang up.
- When walking/moving and the phone is in or out of the supplied T-Mobile carrying case, on your belt buckle, inside any of your pockets, etc…, at times the END key will depress simultaneously on an incoming call causing the caller to go automatically to voicemail.
- When walking/moving and the phone is in or out of the supplied T-Mobile carrying case, on your belt buckle, inside any of your pockets, etc…, when listening to music the END key will depress causing a constant BEEPing noise.
After emailing T-Mobile and HTC tech support the only solution they could provide was for the BEEPing noise while listening to music. Their solution was to disable the tone sound on the keyboard and lock the device. This fix worked, but it also disabled the tone sound when dialing a number.
Also, they suggested:
“If you continue to have this problem with your device we would advise against using it. It is not the device that is having an issue”
“Unfortunately the case that you are using on your device is third party because it is not a HTC product. You got it through T-mobile so we can not guarantee that buttons won't be pressed on the device when in the case”.
I tried modifying the original T-Mobile case by cutting a slot in the liner just above the END key, however the same problem occurred, mostly when taking the phone out of the case to answer a call. I purchased/tired several different cases, but most that fit made the phone too bulky and awkward to keep in my pocket. Lastly, I just started using the phone without a case, unfortunately the same problems cropped up.
Perhaps, this problem is not an issue with many who use this phone, but for me, the above problems happened so often I decided to abandon the Wing (took their advice) and go back to BlackBerry. If anyone has a solution to the above problems, like reprogramming the END key, I would greatly appreciate the fix.
Take note, T-Mobile and HTC scouts. Fix or redesign it!
