GPS

Well.....
Since no one is replying I guess
I will post my own reply from my Wing!

Since my post I found my old Microsoft USB GPS receiver in the basement. I'm a truck driver so I need up to date real time maps & traffic all the time so since no one had replied, I thought I would give this Microsoft GPS a try first!

I remembered that Pharos had made a Bluetooth "Dock" for it so I set out on the web to find one ( not knowing if they still sell it )....

Guess what?
Fry's Electronics sells them, so when I was in indianapolis IN. I went to Fry's & bought one.

Well, I got it connected to my Wing with a little effort on com port 6 Via the "External GPS" icon under settings.
Then I wanted to see what all the talk was about "Live Search"....
OMG.......WOW.....
Who needs TomTom!
I clicked on "GPS location" in LiveSearch & it pulled me up on a map right away.
WOW....To Cool!

I tried TomTom 6 out also on this Wing & I must say I am very impressed.
The GPS locks on in about a minute from a cold start & TomTom pulls my location up right away.
Very Very happy I bought this phone.

In conclusion, I will tell everyone to buy a Bluetooth GPS receiver for there Wing or any other Windows based phone.
As of right now I can't say if one receiver is better than the other,
I can only tell U that the one I have from the year 2000 works very fast & accurate.

I will be buying a TomTom & a Holux 1200 receiver just as a comparison.

I will let U know the differences.

Regards V8

Hey….

Well, Today I stopped at Fry’s Electronics in Indianapolis Indy. Again today
To buy the TomTom receiver .

Got in my Big Rig and opened the box………………..
The receiver is bigger than I thought it would be!

I slid open my Wing and clicked on the TT software.
I turned on the receiver and waited for it to acquits the satellites.
The receiver found 11 Sat’s. in under a minute from a cold start.

While I was driving on interstate 70 ( down town Indy. ) the software wasn’t as accurate as I had hoped.
When I would drive past an off ramp, the receiver would show me getting off the off ramp (not cool )
Also……..the icon that represents the vehicle would jump ahead and flicker……… ( also not cool )

I wasn’t sure if it was something I did so I did a soft reset and started again but I had the same problem.
The receiver worked about the same in “Live search”

After a full charge I let it run on Batteries only………………I got about 9 hours before a complete drain.
I do like the auto shut off feature when it can’t find a Bluetooth connection.

The Microsoft receiver ( above post ) was much more accurate…………just not as fast on cold start.

Conclusion: the TT receiver is not as impressive as I thought it would be
The 8 year old Microsoft receiver is much more accurate.

Can’t wait for my Holux 1200 receiver to come on a UPS truck next week

I will let U know the conclusion about that at the end of next week
Also I will upload some Pic’s of them for a size comparison.

Regards V84x4

Hey,.............

Just got home to find my HOLUX 1200 on the front porch.

Took it out of the box...........jumped in my car & started up my Wing.
Then I set the BlueTooth properties in my Wing to except the Holux receives pass code (0000) then I started up TomTom on my Wing.

WOW......in a matter of seconds TomTom was finding about 11 Sat's.
Driving down the road, the TT software tracked accuratly and fast..

Conclusion: The HOLUX m1200 is the ****....
very small & accurate, I will tell U how long
the battery life is at the end of next week.

I think I will return the TT receiver to Fry's electronics that thing is to slow........DONT BUY ONE!

Regards V8

Hi I have the Wing as well and I have the Pharos iGPS-500 (PT-120) and I can't seem to figure out how to make it work. I'm planning on using with Windows Live Search. I was able to connect it (COM7) but how can I actually use it with Live Search. What were your settings for "External GPS"? Thank you in advance

Wow you mean there really is a gps package that runs right on a wing? You don't say if you have tmobile because apparently tmobile's incarnation of the wing has so much extraneous crap on it that most gps packages won't run properly on it. I would like to try tom tom but I really don't want to lay out that much cash if I don't need to, trying to get my old iguidance to run on my e805 with a new cf gps because apparently the iguidance doesn't care for my old sirf IIe chipset cf units; we'll see. If I can't make it work it sounds like tom tom is about my only choice because tmobile didn't leave 20K free after all their crap on there and there are several things I wish I could at least unload if not remove completely from the phone to give me the room I need.
