They probably have some corporate quota of device gimping to meet. After de-clocking the processor, removing the 4GB of internal memory, axeing the FM radio, and wiping out the g-sensor they probably realized that they hadn't quite spent enough money crippling the device as much as they hoped for.
So to still obtain peak efficiency of maximum customer f!ckage, it went with their business plan to axe just a wee bit of resolution out of the camera as well.
Joking aside, the camera is the same though. At least I am pretty sure, I mean we can't say for certain. But, the Diamond's actual camera resolution is like 3.15 or 3.17 MP or something like that, I think in the image above they just decided to call it a 3.1 or Sprint just decided to call theirs a 3.2.
Same with Audi's Direct Injection FSI V6. It is really a 3.1 liter V6 but Audi calls it a 3.2.

I had the same issue. I ended up getting a Garmin Mobile 10 for my XV6700. Works great and I don't have to ever rely on a phone I'm getting to have GPS or the need for a data package to keep getting the maps. And it's not Verizon's lame setup. I ended up getting it for like $130. So for me, I can live without the GPS.
I guess the only features that Verizon could axe that would REALLY upset me are the screen and TouchFlo interface as it is (I don't need it Verizonized). I don't like the idea of the limiting of the CPU or RAM. I can live with the axing of FM, accelerometer, and GPS.
But of course I would perfer Verizon doesn't touch it beyond sticking their logo on it. However the day that happens...

Awesome man! I've been searching for Verizon news on the diamond every day, but somehow I missed that one. Who knows, it could be possible, that link is the same speculation I posted earlier in the thread. I am still really hoping for a brushed stainless steel look.
I can't wait. I love my Samsung i730, but god the Diamond is a sexy device.

It's close guys! According to this document posted by Engadget training on the Diamond should be completed by December 3. Can't wait for this thing.

Looking good! I can't wait for the Diamond. What a shame they are still expecting it to be gimped. Who knows, perhaps Verizon could be doing this as an attempt to be more competitive with pricing? If we can get the Diamond off the bat for 200 instead of Sprint's 250, then I could possibly see it.
Who knows though, maybe they are looking for larger profit margins.

Any App Any Device
Last year Verizon opened up their network so that any phone that can pass their network test could be used. Sprint phones can be used on Verizon so I wonder if they would allow the non-crippled HTC Diamond on the network. It'd be nice to have GPS and the faster processor.

Well, from what i gather so far, they all have GPS. We can't say for sure on the Verizon version, but it should have GPS. I think the only things the verizon version won't have compared to Sprint's as far as the actual hardware goes is the faster processor, slight memory changes (less of something, but more of something else to make up for the slower processor), elimination of the 4gb on board storage in favor of a microsd slot (not a bad thing IMO), and the elimination of the G-sensor.
Other than that, lets hope thats it as far as what gets crippled.

Why is it a bust? I think it performs quite well.

Well I think since I am A 760 user I'll interpret this for you "G-Sensor is a bust" see: "taken out by Verizon''. Someone else has pointed out on here that sprints devices will be allowed to be on "the network" soon.. I believe that they were mistaken, in saying that this could be done already. I may be wrong but I think that only the decision is official so far, it has not actually happened yet, but will latter this year.
That being said you could buy a sprint device, and sell the one that you can get from Verizon( as a replacement for your 760 ) on eBay. Likely you'll end up shelling out a few hunde extra...
I'm still stuck on the hard # keys on the outside of my i-760.
it's to bad they just don't read through the forums, then they would know better what users want. That is the one place where the crappintosh phone almost get's it right
