Picture Mail & MMS operate differently but basically accomplish the same thing, in that both technologies allow you to send & receive pictures via your phone number (vs. email address).
Picture Mail is unique to Sprint in the way it works. Picture Mail uses the web to send and receive images, while MMS uses an extension of the SMS protocol to send and receive images.
One benefit of Picture Mail, is the ability to login to the Picture Mail portal from any browser to review pictures you've received.
Until now there has been no Picture Mail application built into WM PDA's, like there has in other SPCS camera phones, so we've had no way of (officially) sending pictures to other phones that were either MMS or Picture Mail capable.
Not to get into an iPhone vs. Diamond debate, it's still worth noting that we have a feature in Picture Mail that that the iPhone does not. I have the iPhone on one of my lines, and it does NOT send pictures directly to another phone number.
I'm starting to wonder if the reason the pictures don't show up in the picture mail inbox, instead going into the text message inbox with a link is because under device information my user name is xxxxxx@sprintpcs.com
yet when i log in to picture mail on my pc it says my new address is xxxxxx@pm.sprint.com
The first address is used to authenticate you to the Vision network. The second address is specific to Picture Mail. You can change the first address by using your MSL code to enter programming mode, but you don't want to do that, as you will no longer be able to access the data network.
I think the way it's working for you now is the way it's supposed to work.

how do i change that in my phone?
I have an update on this. My PictureMail now sends & receives through the PictureMail application, but I had to do the following:
1.) Called Sprint advanced technical support
2.) Had them remove PictureMail from my account
3.) Had them add PictureMail to my account.
Once they did that, I couldn't neither send nor receive PictureMail. The tech said it could take several hours and that she would call me back in a few hours to see if it was working. After about an hour, I gave up and did a hard reset. After the hard reset, all my data stopped working (including Vision & PictureMail). So then I did this:
5.) Dialed ##3282#
6.) Clicked Edit and entered the MSL from above
7.) Clicked on Active Profile
8.) Clicked Edit
9.) Change value from 0 to 1 and clicked OK
10.) Clicked Yes to update & then clicked OK to reset
Once I did that everything started to work again. So I'm not sure if all that is required, but those are the steps I went through today.
