6945 GPS Useability?
We're probably going to be getting new converged devices within the next 6 months, and I had some questions/concerns about the function of the GPS software that comes on the iPAQ 6945.
First, I'd like to hear from anyone who's used the unit (or another converged device for topographical maps and trail-finding/following) in the backcountry. Screen size is probably going to be an issue; being able to see where we are vs where we are going in some detail is a *good thing.*
Also, I am unfamiliar with the software that comes with the 6945 - is it strictly for road nav, or can it also be used for backcountry applications? (I couldn't even find out the name of the software) We extensively use USGS Topo maps currently (I'm a Biology Major and hubby was a backcountry guide, and we are often in the Frank Church Wilderness Area), uploaded to a traditional GPS Device via National Geographic or DeLorme topo; both of these programs have a ppc app available.
We're also considering something like the i730 or Tmobile MDA; these have the larger screen size, but don't have the built-in GPS (we'd get a BT receiver); GPS useability will determine our choice; the 6945 seems like an ideal device for us (GPS, WiFi, BT, qwerty, WM5), except for that danged screen size! (I'm assuming here that the i730 and MDA allow full-screen use with the GPS software)
One question that might be silly: I assume the GPS will work while OUT of cell service range. It does, doesn't it? The phone doesn't limit the GPS functionality for some reason? I doubt this is the case, but you never know what manufacturers/cell companies will do. Can't assume anything!
If the 240x240 screen size limits the functionality of the GPS app, then this phone is out. (and I don't want it to be out - it's nearly perfect!) Wish there was a way to "try" these phones out before we have to commit to a single one.
