Hi there,
does anybody know how to use the HP 6515 as a bluetooth dial up modem for a laptop through a cellular network? I don't want to use the GPRS feature.
this is a very good question Bernd. i tried that too and failed in many ways. i get error 777 on the laptop and it says there is a problem with the device (6510) modem. if anyone finds the solution please let me know at unknownwicked@yahoo.com. many thanx
I Contacted HP support (chat support), and were advised to contact the local HP support direct by phone.
The answer is:
Currently it is not possible to enable a mobile Internet GPRS pathway/gateway through the Ipaq 6515. No driver, update path or patch are in the pipeline to enable the specific functionality.
Funny enough it is possible the other wary around, even by means of the MS Sync connection?
I was advised to "shop" in the Internet for possible 3rd. party developed drivers.
Per, I tried the same, contacted HP via chat. they told me to contact HP Romania but they don't know what they're talking about. On the CD that came with the Ipaq I found a link that was supposed to enable me to download "HP iPAQ Wireless Modem Application" but the link takes me to the hp.com page and not to the download link. Based on the description of this application I am sure this is what we need for our purpose. I contacted HP Romania again and asked them for the correct link to download it... it's been 3 days and still waiting for an answer... if they don't have it although it is included and presented on the cd, I will kick up the scandal of their lifetime because they sold me the application within the ipaq sales package but the application does not exist. this is fraud. I will be happy to have my lawyer explain to them what fraud means.
dear all,
hp romania today gave me a beta (!) version of this application, without any user instructions or anything else. they gave me a bunch of files with the "read me" instruction saying to copy them to the /windows folder on the ipaq. did so, but it's not working. I AM SICK OF THIS. today, the dvdrom on one of my colleagues' brand new hp laptop broke.
I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER HP PRODUCT AGAIN. i have wasted time with this piece of **** and am soooooooo frustrated
It is indeed a scandal: the cause seems to be that the modem driver does not support compression mode! the hell what a problem that is: everybody has the algorithms for such a thing
Needless to say that I contacted HP support chat they told me that they are not there for "such complex questions but for basic manipulations indeed"
My conclusions on the 6515
* COMPLETLY IMMATURE PRODUCT luanched months before being ready
* GUI (graphical user interface) is JUST SCRAP many fault, more shortcomings, almost no implementation of the local menu key, impossible to use with only the keyboard
* Phone: SCRAP or PLAIN RUBBISH or **** depending on how many calls I've made: the cheapest phone on earth has more advanced fuinctions than this (ever tried to save a phone number you dialed into your phonebook? you just need to retype it no cut and paste available)
ALL IN ALL
This is a proof that HP as a company is running completly insane and nobody is surprized that a company daring to launch such scrappy stuff (600-700$ still not just cheap stuff) is laying off people by the thousands and I predict bankruptcy in matter of a couple of years (or dismantlment which is the same)
EACH PERSON BUYING A 6515 IS A LOST CUSTOMER FOR HP I Tell you
Has one of you tried the IRda modem? My portable doesn't see it. The document doesn't state that it exist. Drivers are in the machine.
I used the portable->BT->gsm (sony)->gprs->ISP really a lot and I'm stuck with no solution
I intend to send my lawyer hunting for refund + penalties
We might want to do this a lot at the same time would perhaps get them moving
Well, indeed HP really sucks. the 65xx is not just an exception...
if any of you want the beta version I got from them (six files you are supposed to copy in the /windows directory of the ipaw) write to me at unknownwicked@yahoo.com. maybe someone will figure out how to make it work...
my problem at the moment is that i need to connect the laptop to the internet while on the go. how the hell am i going to do that if this piece of junk is useless? i'll just buy a nokia... i hear they're launching an E series and one of the models in E series can also be used as a "broadband modem" for PCs... i really hope there aren't going to be problems with that because a broadband, WCDMA modem in a phone sounds in a really great
If you need to connect a laptop to the internet via the hw6515, it can be done either tethered by USB or by bluetooth. In each case, you would use GPRS/EDGE to do it. Why would you want to use a dial up modem connection to an ISP other than your cell provider?
And even if Nokia comes up with a "broadband modem" phone, you would still need to connect via the cell provider and not to a standard dial-up modem, since it won't support "broadband" anyway.
Hi John
I would very much appreciate it if you told me precisely how to connect the laptop to the internet via the ipaq. i don't care whether i use gprs or something else. i called the mobile phone company, followed their instructions and failed...
many thanx
First, you need to have a sync cable or use bluetooth. Otherwise, it won't work. (No IR, no cradle, etc.) If you use bluetooth, you will need to pair the devices and then make sure the ipaq has dial-up networking services enabled via the bluetooth settings. I am assuming you are using Windows XP on the laptop. Once they are paired, you set up a dial-up networking connection. You will need to know the string to dial (typically *99# or something similar, depends on cell carrier) and it will finish by creating an icon in your networking folder that I put on my desktop. Double-clicking that icon will start a dial-up networking session and use the hw6515 as a modem via GPRS/EDGE. You can also do this via a sync cable, but for some reason, the cradle doesn't seem to work.... but that's because I use the cradle with a desktop with LAN access to the internet anyway.
If you search the whole Pocket PC phones area here, you can find a lot of information on how to do this. There are a lot of combinations of devices (laptops, desktops, pdaphones, etc.) and lots of different settings based on the providers. There is no "best one way" to do it.
Unfortunately, my laptop just went through a flood and is trashed, otherwise I'd post screen shots from it with all of the setup menus, etc. The hw6515 is not junk... it really works!
in another thread Mandj "internet access with laptop using infrared and hw6515 - GPRS " posted a solution quite for using the BT DSUN modem and I tried it out so far it works
So what you try is to connect a pc to the internet using BT & GPRS ie
PC->Bluetooth->6515->GPRS
I used to dial *99***X# as I used to do on my Ericsson phone and this DOES NOT WORK (pc reports a modem error)
But Mandj's dialing sequence/number DOES work ie *99#
Thanks Mandj
Armand
HP Support didn't know and didn't help thanks to Mandj
Hi Guys, I do not know if the forum is out of date, however for the benefit of all those who wish to use the iPAQ 6500 series as a wireless modem, do as follows:
a. Go to the site www.hp.com
b. Click on Software & Drivers
c. Enter your model eg. iPAQ 6515
d. Click on your operating system
e. A page will be presented with the iPAQ modem driver.
f. Download the driver and install in your pc.
g. perform a sync with your iPaq docked in the cradle.
h. Your modem is now installed.
Important:
After installation you will see a Dial up connection on your pc.
Do the following:
Undock the iPAQ.
Click on start- prgrams- wireless modem
click on START
The screen on your iPAQ will say "Start Service"
Dock the iPAQ into the cradle
In your PC, double click on the newly created Wireless modem icon
Dial and you are all set to go.
P.S. You must have GPRS enabled to use this feature.
Tks
I found that as well but couldn't find out what it is about as my ipaq is installed in French and this update is only in English as I understand
What I understand is that this is to allow to connect to the internet through Activesync (but I might be wrong as I couldn't try it yet)
By the way how can I know if I have a 6515 or a 6515a or a 6515b etc up to 6515h ??? what the hell does this last letter mean and wherte does it come from?
Go to www.hp.com. Select FRANCE as you site. You will be shown the page in French. Click on Support/Software/Drivers (Bottom right). Feed in the necessary information. In the search for drivers string feed in iPAQ 6515. The model query page will be presented. In your iPAQ click on START - SETTINGS- HP ASSET VIEWER. Scroll and Click on SYSTEM. Model ID: will state your model 6515 a, b, c, d e or whatever.
Go to your laptop and feed in the model number and you will get the French version of the modem driver.
Alternatively, if you have an email which can accept large files, forward your email to me at admin@gfsllc.com and I will send you the French driver.
I've been able to get the Bluetooth Connection to work between my laptop and PDA, allowing access to the Edge network through the IPAQ. But I only get speeds of around 100 kBPS. Is the USB any faster?
Can't tell myself, because I've never been able to get the USB to work in spite of many calls to HP and Cingular, and lots of careful following of instructions. Always get some kind of "Hardware Failure Message".
So for those who have been able to link over USB, was there a magic setting you had to change in the profile? (Windows XP Pro SP2) or a particular order you had to connect things together? Call to HP suggested a hard reboot or exchanging the unit. Don't want to go down that road if there is not much speed improvement over the BT connection.
Your thoughts apreciated. (BTW, HP Technical Support leaves much to be desired, but then, you already knew that...)
