Barrr, I think we spoke about this a couple of weeks ago on PM, I had the same problem, It was a HW problem with the WIFI module on the device.
You got 2 options :
1. Contact HP if the device is still un warrenty and wait 2 weeks until it fix.
2. Contact another lab and be ready to pay something like 100$ for the board replacement.

No it's not. It's more of a WiFi program failure. I have played with it this morning and when this happens the WiFi Settings are missing the wireless TAB. Only the Network Adapters TAB is functional. Since this is a 6315 I have tried to reinstall the WiFi patch. I was not successful since the ROM is already updated but it shook something and now both TABs are there. When this happens the WiFi turns off just fine and I see the red X when it's off. Otherwise, when only the Network Adapters TAB is showing I can't turn the WiFi off and it's always brown. ??????

Smack it on the back and see what happens. Seriously, mine used to do that and when I would smack it firmly (not violently) it would magically work. I think it may have been an issue with the chip coming unseated or something.

I love it. As an Electronic Engineer I can definitely relate to what you're saying. I think I'll try that and I might add some old Hebrew praying combined with an Indian rain dance (with sound).
But seriously, thanks for the tip.

Barrr, which 'wifi update' did you install and over which rom version??

This could be an important bug-fix to the ROM sets listed here. If the 'factory' ROMs have a bug in the WiFi manager that the wifi update fixes, that fix (registry, dll, whatever) should probably be incorporated into the unofficial ROMs.

No no, I'm on the official ROM 1.10.08 straight out of HP's web page and the update 2.00.49.63 is also installed. I've checked the version on the iPAQ after the installation and it's up to date.

Ok, cool. That driver version (2.00.49.63) is already in the 1.11.10ENG ROM.

As I said; smack it on the back...I'm serious. Mine would just quit working (show up WiFi (L) or some crazy thing, and button would just stay amber).

I just opened mine up (out of warranty anyway) and ended up screwing up the touchscreen. Got a nice new Qtek 9100 as a result .

The Wireless TAB isn't there because the driver failed to load, The Driver failed to load as the HW is broken.

That the reason smacking on the back my help....

But its still HW problem

Finally - a solution that makes sense.
So as described in my first post of this thread my 6315 (I also have a 6365 which works fine) sometimes after SR the WiFi remains OFF but sometimes it comes ON, without having the capability to turn it OFF. In that state the connectivity icon shows just the G for the GPRS capability but the WiFi Led blinks orange.
When that happens go to Settings - System and run the Self Test program. Now cancel the V in all the tests except WiFi. Run the test and wait 15 seconds. Nothing will happen - it will not ask you to turn WiFi on since the program think it's actually on. Now OK the program and it will close. Make sure it is fully closed and not just minimized - I have SPB pocket plus so mine closes. After that The WiFi antenna will appear in the connectivity icon and you'll be able to turn WiFi OFF.
I'm happy

Yes LV - it's been bugging me for some time especially since this 6315 is used by one of my employees and she's been complaining all the time.

Try running the Self Test program for a longer time and try to touch the connectivity icon (on the top line) while it's running. I don't know if it works every time since the 6315 is not mine, it'a an employee's PDA but I hear it worked for her so I'm happy.

Same problem here

Whenever a soft reset happens, my h6315 freezes after few minutes.....Problem seems like wifi is ON, but it cannot be turned OFF. When it is ON, I get G sign on top and not wifi sign. Now, after 10-15 times doing the Soft reset, I get to see wifi on with the sign, so I turn it OFF as fast as I can and it turns OFF and everything seems to be fine after that until next soft reset.

I've tried self test method, but I still cannot turn WiFi OFF. Seems to be a frustrating problem, wasn't getting this error for long. Just recently started getting it out of no where

For all you guys out there who have this problem I have submitted this case to HP:

Case ID: 1212369985

Submitted: 2006-08-12 07:52:15 GMT+02:00

Problem description :
This seems like a universal problem because I hear this from
many people over the Internet Forums everywhere. I have both
H6365 and H6315 in my company. The problem with the 6315 is
that after SR the WiFi is on but the WiFi Settings don't show
the Wireless TAB, only the Network Adaptors TAB shows. In this
situation it is not possible to turn WiFi off. This also locks
the phone and makes it extremely slow after 20-30 seconds of
use. In fact it is impossible to use the device this way. When
the device comes up this way the connectivity icon shows G for
the GPRS service and the WiFi antenna is not there. Also on the
iPAQ Wireless program the WiFi button is brown and the WiFi LED
blinks orange. It is impossible to turn WiFi off in this
situation.
People all over have tried a million solutions but I personally
think it's a software bug. I was able to tease the device with
numerous SR's, sometimes after a SR the device comes back with
the connectivity icon showing the WiFi antenna and then it is
possible to turn the WiFi OFF. A self test on the WiFi only
sometimes works too and jogs something internally that makes
the device show it's WiFi Wireless TAB and then it is possible
to turn the WiFi off.
I think it's time for HP to do something about this for its
H6315 users and maybe for other 63XX users who encounter this
problem. Please take care of this.

Bary:

I still have a problem with the wifi. when i run the test it passes after 30seconds...but still the wifi will not turn off and the G icon is still on the menu bar. Do you have an address to download the original ROM? Has HP reply to your Case?

thank you for your time
