Here is my app list. Everything was running stable for a full year on a WM2003 h5550. When I got my 6315 I reinstalled the apps exactly as they were on the older iPaq first under TMO ROM v1.10.8 and then to the generic hacked 6365 ROM v 1.11.
Main Memory install:
Robomagic TodayCal
psShutXP
MS Entertainment Pack shared files
HP softPaq SP30003 for high-definition audio
Birdsoft Tri-Peaks
Spb Pocket Plus
pocketMax screenGuard
pocketMax PhoneAlarm w/ skins
Microsoft Reader v2.4
Macromedia Flash Player
FileStore install:
CheckNotify (ScaryBear Software)
MS Hearts
Resco Registry
KSE Backgammon
Elastic Cribbage
GSPlayer
Lygea HP15c Calculator Emulator
Pocket GrandMaster Lite
TomeRaider v3
WiFiFoFum
Resco Explorer
Spb Full Screen Keyboard
A load of freeware games from
www.not-big-deal.com
AIDII PocketCasino
MobiPocket Pro reader
SK Software SKTools
Tweaks 2k2 .net (PC Counselor)
Pocket Earth (Blue Point Studios)
My philosophy for the FileStore vs Main Memory is this:
If an app will be needed on startup, or if the response time of the app is critical to its stability, install it in Main Memory. There are also some proggys with badly written installers or .dlls that cannot handle being installed in other than their default directory. Thankfuly those are few and far between. Another class of finicky software is that which replaces ROM-resident modules with updated versions. MS Reader is one of these. The .cab for Reader v2.4.1 is >2700 Kb but the real-world impact on main memory is about 500 kb.
Otherwise, everything else goes into FileStore. I have a 512 Mb SD card in the machine as a target for backups, holding ebooks, mp3s, .cabs that I have harvested from the installers, etc, etc. I've also got cabinstl on the SD card so that I'll be stand-alone in case I ever have to recover from a hard reset.
A word on using the FileStore for applications installs. The iPaq itself will stash all kinds of config files in the FileStore. This is to ensure that certain config information will be available after a hard/soft reset. I have found that if you run your FileStore down to less than 1 Mb of free space, your 63xx will start to slow down to a crawl and may lock up altogether as the FileStore gets closer to being 100% full. Be Careful out there.
Anyway, with this kind of install, I generally have about 30 Mb of free main memory and 5 Mb of FileStore space depending on the cruft and temp files left behind by PIE and other apps. The SKTools application has an option to clean out same said junk on-demand.
