Well, I have to admit I hate the speaker on this thing. Just like they did when they switched from the 3900 to the 5400 series. I don't understand why they keep messing this one.
But now that I've found myself missing several calls because of the low volume speaker, I hate it even more.
Out of desperation I downloaded a free sound editor from
http://www.nch.com.au/wavepad/index.html Windows Sound Recorder will work too but it is somewhat limited. With the ipaq in the craddle just copy the ringers located in Windows or Windows/Rings dir to you PC. The editor can read 'wav' as well 'wma' files with a free plug in. Open the ringer with the editor, click 'select all', and click 'amplify'. I use 200-250%. Then save with a different name and transfer back to the ipaq. If you want the sound to appear in the Phone ringers pull down menu, then save the file in the Windows/Rings dir. No matter if its wav or wma, it will work.
Of course there is an obvious limit to this. Depending on the sound itself, at some level, clipping will occur resulting in a distorted sound. So don't go crazy. Highly pitched sounds work better with this ipaq, since the speaker is clearly more efficient at those frequencies.
The result is VERY noticeable. Now the thing RiIiiINNggSS for real!
Told you it was a dumb solution. But it works.
Hope this helps.
