Sorry, folks. I had to remove this review. It was a very positive review and I look forward to sharing in the fun when the product is released.

Very nice... I agree that this will be a home run. I just hope we can get them in our store.

Cool beans. Is the forum open for questions?

I wonder if it will include the Widcom Bluetooth stack and allow you to send the PocketPC audio over the BT headset and not just the phone audio. I listen to audio books over a BT headset with an iPaq 5555 which is great. The Widcom stack has a voice gateway profile allowing you to do this. I also own an XDA II and you can only send voice calls over the BT headset, not the PPC audio.

I also wonder about voice software - does it come built in, allowing you to initiate voice activated calls over the BT headset? With the XDA II, you can install third party voice activations apps like Microsoft's VoiceDial, but you can't voice dial from the headset directly.

Also, you say its "available" July 27th, but "ships" mid-August. So, does that mean you can buy it and get it shipped and actually get your hands on it from HP directly on July 27th or is it in mid-August? And when does T-Mobile get it? Mid-August? A little confusing there. It may cost more direct from HP, but it will be unlocked and might be worth doing that.

great review! I was a little disappointed to hear the date was pushed again. Do you know how firm the dates you got are?

I too am a little confused about the shipping and delivery.

I have been waiting to dump Sprint for a long time, and I think this is it!

Thanks again!!

Aside from the pretty well thought of detachable keyboard, seems like the overall HARDWARE design and specs are not THAT major of a leap forward compared to the almost 1.5 yr old i700? bt, wifi,...all those are standard issue, and minimum expectations for nowadays.

How does it compare performance wise against i700, or XDA II?

I mean, for the time that they had to develop this, to me it's rather dissappointing. Who can seriously choose this over the MPx, for example? (aside from price maybe).

I think the only thing going for this baby is the fact that the HP name still carries more cachet than say...Samsung?

Thanks so much for the review, but I'll be frank...I was hoping for performance closer (not matching) to the some of the latest PDA out there.

EDGE eta?

Thanks for the preview! I can't wait!!

Did the HP rep say when EDGE would be available on the 6300? It's already available on my network here (in Canada)...

The Voice Command software does NOT come built-in, but the unit I saw had it installed and it was very good in terms of out of the box recognition for the few minutes I got to use it. I was able to dial my work voice mail using just voice commands. It was simple and effective.

I was also confused by the statement they made about availability dates. I believe that July 27th is the public announcement date and August 15th is the actual availability through HP and also T-Mobile. I do not believe that it will cost more through HP, but I could be wrong. My company has a "big deal" with HP and since it hasn't been officially announced yet, I don't have reseller pricing to compare it to.

Anyway, I hope this helps. I'll find out more soon.
Thanks for the reply

My XDA II also can do voice dial via Microsoft Voice Dial software. But since its not built in, you can't initiate a call from a bluetooth headset (i.e., the phone stays in your pocket while you make voice dial calls direct from the headset without you ever having to touch the phone). You have to take the phone out, hit your assigned voice dial button and say your contact. Only then will the call will transfer to the BT headset. This sounds like it will be the case with the 6300

Also, I hate when companies do that - announce that something is "available" even though its really still weeks away from actually shipping. I'd like to know how they consider that "available".

The HP guy said that this was in development for over a year (in the form that we see it here) and that they wanted to meet the price point for PDAphones out there. If you're looking for a super-fast PDA first, phone second, this isn't it. On the other hand the HP rep also said they are developing some CF cellular voice and data cards to plug into the higher end iPaqs to give them voice and/or data capabilities. Sounds interesting.
As I said previously, not looking for this HP6310 to be the fastest PDA out there, but, given the time HP or Compaq had over the other competitors out there (t-mob's XDA has been out for a while, i700 was reviewed by FCC back in August of 2002), at first glance, I was just disappointed by the lack of any major breakthrough as far as the hardware features/performance. I will wait and see though...if we can buy this for $225 or less with a 2-yr contract, that would qualify as a breakthrough in itself. A month ago, I got my i700 for $450 from VZW w/ a 1-yr contract, according to my VZW corp. contact, now you can get it for $400 after all the current rebates.

I remember reading about HP's prototype with CF cellular/data cards that came in GSM or CDMA, and wondering whatever happened to that. THAT was innovation, and a major step forward....but, it was probably shot down by the potential customers: the carriers themselves (fear of sharing a flexible platform with their competitors).

Still...really hoping that someone will actually commercialize that idea. Maybe even a similar-concept SDIO card. These cards would become technology enablers, giving all PDAs out there the potential to become cell phones instead of the 3 or 5 choices we currently have. Instead of a $800 XDA II, imagine $60, or even a $100 CF or SDIO cell card, in a $250 PDA, like the 624Mhz Axim X30. Wet dream on my part probably, given the possible resistance from the carriers, software integration, etc etc.

Yep, they actually had these available for sale at one point before they pulled out of the pdaPhone business for a while... several years ago. I would also think it would be very hard to do that well, especially if you needed a sleeve to even use the CF slot. I just don't think that plan will go anywhere productive, but you can call me a skeptic!

Thanks for the good coverage, by the way!

This may seem like a silly question, but can you tell me if the "h" is capitalized or lower case on the device? Also, what's the distiction between 6300 and 6310? Do both exist?

Would this device be sim locked? If so, would T-mob give customers the unlocking code a few weks after? When I bought my XDA they gave me the unlocking code 2 weeks after purchase.

Thanks

I can answer that one. T-Mobile locks all their phones, but they are pretty reasonable about providing an unlock code if you are on a plan with them. I have done it before and it takes a few weeks but is pretty painless. If you just tell them you will be traveling abroad and will need to use another SIM, they will usually provide you with the unlock code.

Can you comment on the connector on this unit? Does it use the standard Ipaq connector, and will it therefore be backwards compatible with older Ipaq accessories?

I would say that a phone, bluetooth and WiFi all built into one handheld device is pretty breakthrough - considering that the current number of devices with these three features is zero.

The MPx has those features, plus a built in keyboard. It's not available yet, but neither is the ipaq...

Plus a smaller screen, and a company that most businesses have never heard of (when it comes to PocketPCs, anyways).

At least we know that T-Mobile's going to carry the h6300. Anyone heard ANYTHING about who's going to carry the MPx?

Thanks John, good to see this from a trusted source. This is why I enjoy the edginess (no pun) of GSM. I wasn't interested in this device, but now I think it's definitely worth a look.

The fact the most businesses have never heard of Motorola when it comes to PPCs is completely meaningless. This product will be evaluated as a communications device primarily - email and phone. You may have noticed a few other companies which have been wildly successful in getting their devices into the enterprise - companies which most business had not heard of either - RIM, Good, Handspring (now Palm). Second, EVERYONE has heard of Motorola, particularly wrt phones. And since these devices will be evaluated in the enterprise as a communications device, it's right up Moto's alley. To think otherwise is delusional.

TM

PS - as for hearing who's going to carry the MPx, yes, there have been plenty of rumors, TMo among them.

I think you have your alleys crossed.

Communication device or not, this device (in most shops) is going to be managed by the IT folks, not the telecom folks (who are the ones most familiar and comfortable with the Moto brand).

IT folks want to know things like product roadmaps. How long is Moto planning on providing support for this device? Will there be an upgrade device? Will accessories purchased for this device work on future models? How often will updates addressing issues be updated? How committed is Moto to this new arena?

RIM, Palm and HP have been around and paid their dues to where most shops are comfortable and familiar with them, and hopefully Moto will make a very good showing on this go around. But to think that Moto's just as evenly set as HP is pretty naive.

But I can tell you that the IT decision makers in the $3B enterprise shop that I work in aren't interested in the MPx at all. "Let me know when their second PocketPC Phone is out and we'll talk" is the line I hear the most.
