I would like to know how the keyboard attaches to the Ipaq phone if there is anyway a picture could be listed with it connected I would greatly appreciate it.
The smaller screen (2.5" i believe) of the MPX is a concern. Also, while I have been impressed with Motorola's feature sets in their new phones (the V600 features are really outatanding), their build qualities have been slipping lately. For example, the V600's legendary flip cracks and scratches. Motorola phones also tend to be more buggy than usual.
Soon they should release their MPX220 - a Smartphone 2003 flip phone, bluetooth, EDGE support and a 1.3MP camera. A video for it looked pretty cool. Like the MPX PPC phone, I am looking forward to the MPX220 and being wary of it at the same time.
Originally posted by jpmihalk Sorry, I don't have a picture with the keyboard attached. It clips on to the bottom and two buttons on the outside release it. The HP rep was a little wary of me taking pictures of everything, so I had to distract him to take the ones I got.
Is it super sturdy once clipped on?
From what I've seen of thumbboard devices, people don't really support the upper part with their hands that much. It'd kinda stink if it popped off easily.
How about RIM connectivity? There were rumors that it will offer the same functionality as the blackberry's... Did you see any bundled software for this or is there any indication by the HP rep that it will be there? Maybe T-Mobile will have that as an add-on?

RIM, Palm and HP have been around and paid their dues to where most shops are comfortable and familiar with them, and hopefully Moto will make a very good showing on this go around. But to think that Moto's just as evenly set as HP is pretty naive.
But I can tell you that the IT decision makers in the $3B enterprise shop that I work in aren't interested in the MPx at all. "Let me know when their second PocketPC Phone is out and we'll talk" is the line I hear the most.
I'm usually not a Moto defender, but I'll make an exception this time. Moto pulled out of the symbian consortium last year, and announced preferred OS of their phones going forward will be MS' windows mobile/smartphone/ppc OS...so, I'd say they are pretty committed, as evidenced by last year's mpx200, to be followed by the mpx, mpx220, mpx100.
Also, as far as the 2.8" screen of the mpx goes, I think it was driven by the desire for a flip style form factor, with integrated numeric keypads and keyboards. In this application, I think it will actually be advantageous in a convergent device. Witness Treo...smaller screen, but great overall form factor and function, selling like hotcakes. My only concern is exactly like DaleReeck's concern: build quality. Moto needs to improve their build quality, ESPECIALLY with the dual-hinges design. Well, second concern is the lack of CDMA version so far.
Removable battery? (I assume so, because of the charger, but it could be like the HTC with a latch on the back)
Is it just me, or do I see a microphone in the cradle? Does this mean that they actually designed it to use speakerphone while sitting on your desk? I do this with my HTC, and it works only ok.
(the more I think about this, the more it must be true. The keyboard covers any logical area where a microphone would be, right? Yet, the keyboard is meant to be used in call; look at the green/red buttons! Also, we know the connector is different--must be because of the support for a microphone in the keyboard, and it looks, the cradle!)
I'm almost sure to buy this, as I love my pocket pc phone edition (with wireless active sync), but I love my tablet PC with bluetooth. I hate having to switch to my T-610. Things like the keyboard or wifi or EDGE (yay!) are just icing for me.
Good review. Sounds like it will be reliable. Tmobile has been stalling dates since May. I talked with them the other day and now advised the HP will be released in August due to them wanting to sell the rest of their old PPC phones... Apparently thats not true, Hp hasnt released it yet and thats why.
About the performance, sounds like it will be good but not great. Sounds like it wont be very fast either but I suppose it is acceptable. Price is definately good compared to some others out there. I am glad to hear the internet functions well on Tmobile. Didnt you say that the area you tested this was not a great area for Tmobile also?
The MPX is rumored to also have the same TI processor, 200mhz, so it sounds like it will perform about the same as the HP? John, do you know anything about that?
Also, the MPX is a triband and not a quad band which limits its connection ability in the US, or so I have been told. I still want the MPX but its looking like the MPX will almost be the same as the HP performance wise but with the nifty clamshell, landscape dual hinge feature. I dont know if thats worth hundreds more dollars?? My decision is still up in the air I guess...

The MPx is going to be available in two different triband flavors... one with the 850Mhz, the other with the 900Mhz, which I agree is not ideal for US. I'd rather have both of those frequencies so I can have the best chance of coverage in the US.
Of course all of this is conjecture and we'll have to wait and see what they finally deliver.
Originally posted by jpmihalk I don't know much about the MPx other than what has been discussed on the board, so I can't really compare or contrast it with anything else.
Looks like someone made you remove the pictures... NDA?
I noticed the server down for a while, followed by the removal of the pictures. Interesting.
Remember, people, clock speed is in NO WAY the only measure of performance of a processor. I'm sure this TI chip well outperforms the strongarm 206mhz chip we're used to seeing in HTC products. Now, if it's better than the 400mhz Xscale, I dunno. We'll wait for the benchmarks, I guess.
This is getting pretty ugly behind the scenes guys... its a shame because what could be a lot of positive promotion is getting soured badly. Our site was down because of what appeared to be an attack... someone targeted the site this morning and tried to take it down. I would like to think that it had nothing to do with this story being published.

Well, I don't know if I'd conclude that... but I would have appreciated someone involved at HP having given me a courtesy contact. I tried to email Scott, but didn't get a reply.
But, being the guy to try and end on a good note. I am content to reset and start over. I think this is going to be an awesome product, and I can't wait to get my hands on one officially. We'll just have to keep the hype burners on hold for a while. I don't know what's worse... putting products out in the public WAY before you can get them... (i.e. Samsung), or to be FIRST to market (with the Jornada pdaPhone), then get out of the market entirely, then have a home-run to hit, and try to keep everyone in the dark until it is ready to ship? Guess thats why i'm no longer in marketing!
