Using WiFi When Temporary Internet Files and Email Attachments are on Memory Card
I just purchased a WiFi Card for my G1000 and will be using it when it comes in. Thinking ahead, I realized something that could potentially be problematic...
I currently have the registry hack outlined in the stickied thread about making room where Temporary Internet Files are stored on the SC Card. I also have it set up where email attachments are stored on the memory card as well.
Obviously when I am using the WiFi card, there won't be a memory card in there (it is not one of those cards with memory as well as WiFi capabilities). What's gonna happen? Will it just not work? Will it just not save Temporary internet files? Will it blow up? Okay, I kid about that but this is an interesting dilemma and I didn't see it addressed in the searching (I used WiFi and Temporary as search words).
it is addressed in other threads and such. you will get some errors and possibly lockups requiring a soft reset. it would be to your advantage to get a card with memory if you want to use those hacks....

Do you know where I can find the bios update for the G1000 that will allow me to use my recently purchased lan card?

apologies amigo but i do not. sprint and hitachi are lost causes so dont waste your time there. maybe search the archives for someone who may have had in back in the day and contact them offline... i never used WIFI on the G so it was no need for me to get it.
I installed the SDIO update you provided (thanks)
I installed the Drivers Socket provided and then the Wifi companion program
I thought I was good to go so I put the card in and did a soft reset only to get the following error message:
Cannot find "wifiicon" or one of it's componets. make sure filename are correct and all the required libraries are available.
Do you or anyone else have a possible remedy for this? One thing I did notice is the guy from Socket sent me windows 2003 drivers and wifi-companion. Is that the right software because I know G1000's run on pocket pc 2002?
Help?

Hate to be an absolute pest but do you have any installation tips?
Hi, Winston;
Sorry, I haven't been on for a while; new tech job. No, I just installed the update to main memory; if you install it to the SD Card, it just installs to Windows and leaves an empty folder on the card. I haven't used it with a WiFi card; I needed it because it updates the ATI driver for one of my MPEG Players.

Hi again;
the Windows Mobile 2003 drivers will not work, as they require dll's the OS isn't equipped with. You will have to find the PPC 2002 drivers, if they exist.
Well, my first Wi-fi card turned out to not work with PPC 2002 even though the eBay listing said it would. I since purchased a Socket Low Power SDIO Wireless LAN Card which is compatible.
I downloaded and installed the SDIO update and also the drivers which I found on the Socket website. I went to a local Panera and it isn't working...
I created a profile and called it ANY and it does associate with that profile and I get a signal. I the try to go to Pocket Internet Explorer and it just doesn't connect, nor will it connect to check email.
I've messed around with the connections and either it wants to dial up or it quickly says "No page found." I have tried creating a new connection called Wifi but I don't know how to do this. Anyone know what I am doing wrong?
can you sniff any other network or possibly a friends home system?
I can check on that but none that I know of.

when you say you get a signal... do you mean you pick up the SSID of the network your sniffing?
At this location it is right on campus so there are a lot of signals floating around. I set the card to "ANY" and eventually the software locks in on one and start recieving a signal; when this happens the Status screen will show Link Quality, Strength and the IP and the LED on the card will stay solid. It is now that I am connected, supposedly, but I cannot actually connect to anything - as I said, the phone either dials or immediately comes up with the error message "No Website Found" when I try and connect to any site in PIE and checking email is equally ineffectual.

is it unsecured?
Presumably most all of the signals where I was are unsecured as it is in the middle of campus and surrounded by retailers touting their free Wifi; I know the Panera one is.
Quote:
does it ask for a password?
It does nothing but say I am connected and show the changes to the strength of the signal and link quality.
This might come in handy - for me or other folks who get this SDIO card - the attachment is the .PDF manual for the card. It was very difficult to find as the card is discontinued and the Socket website actually has the wrong manual up where this one should be. They don't have the Quick Start guide up either although the Datasheet is up (I attached that as well).
Also to the person using the Socket P300, I do not think it it compatible with PPC 2002 which the G1000 runs; at least the Socket website does not say it is, nor does it supply drivers for it. On eBay there are people selling SDIO Wifi cards but you have to buy one that will work with PPC 2002 - Spectec, Just Mobile and Ambitech are common brands that will not work with our device. The only two that I know are compatible are the Socket one that I purchased (the discontinued one, not the P300) and also SanDisk makes a SC Card with and without 256MB of memory - this is probably the most useful Wifi card for a G1000 since the extra memory is helpful for a device whose limitations mean that a lot of applications have to be loaded on a card that has to be removed to put the Wifi Card in. I don't have that one because it is twice as much money and I want to make sure it works before i go that route...
I am thinking that if I cannot get this to work, maybe it will be the excuse I use to do the Total Equipment Protection upgrade as I can see me taking it into the place to get it repaired and having a confused technician just say "I'm just going to get you a new phone..."
Even though it is supposedly discontinued, I found it - refurbished and possibly with drivers and documentation - on the Socket website for only $39.95. Standard shipping to me in Ohio would be $9.99 which means it is only slightly more than the one I won used on eBay ($40 including shipping). The San Disk one is a lot more.
well keep the list posted on this new card you speak about. i think if you are able to get a signal, IP, and link quality status then you are connected. but it could be that some signals you are picking up may require a password or require your MAC address to be on that systems MAC list so you can access. if you can pick up onther SSIDs then try them all out... it may not hurt to ask the IT department for assistance also. not much help i know.....
i still have my G1K and if i had a sdio card to test out i would...
