hi guys. An excellent forum for an outdated phone that still has some life in it yet. I recently purchased a used one thanks to the "affordable" price of it. Now, i'm wondering... Sometimes doing a soft reset with the stylus on the back will cause the unit i have to do a complete hard reset and lose all it's information. This isn't so bad for the pda aspect if I can re-sync it an hour later, but it's really bad to lose all the phone numbers! So, it doesn't happen every time, but it's enough to be really annoying. It's probably bad enough that i will seek returning it in order to purchase a different one.
Additional quirks:
I purchased retractable 2.5mm earbuds for the jack instead of a 3.5 to 2.5 mm adapter for regular earphones. Plug it in, and i get mono-right audio. Pull it back gently and outward so contacts are working and i get left and right... But that usually also brings up the voice dialer which is really annoying! heh.. Is this common? Or are the contact points internally just worn.. I got the earbuds from boxwave.com as well as a retractable usb sync-charger cable.
I've seen the SD card disappear sometimes, requiring a soft reset on the unit for it to re-register and be able to read/write to it. It's a used Viking 128 megger that came with it. I actually ordered a 1 gig SD card, but it was out of stock, so i am still waiting for it to arrive. This leads me back potentially to the soft reset actually hard resetting the device.
So i guess i'm wondering: If this thing is going to hard reset twice a week or more, then it is certainly effectively useless.. Occasional ones i could overlook as long as i can resync, but that's overkill.
the G's headphone socket has 3 contact points to it. you phones only have 2 . thats why you only hear mono/one side of audio. when you pull the jack out and the voice dialer begins to work, you are actually shorting the contacts causing this to happen.
the other issues you are seing or probably due to misue and abuse form the original owner(s). you will probably continue to have these issues with this phone.
its a great phone (i still use mine and i have had it since they were released) but if you take care of it in its early years then it will cause some issues for you down the road..
well, i expected that with the earphones as soon as i experienced it.. I'll probably end up just looking for minibuds locally or getting a 3.5mm adapter for regular earbuds.. tho it's inelegant, it would work.
I'm more concerned about the soft reset erasing the memory. It just happened 2 minutes ago. I brought it to work with me as i would, synced to work computer for first time, did a full backup to computer. Shortly thereafter it seemed to lockup, so i soft reset it. It reboots in erased format. DOH. Well, do a restore from the memory card which i did yesterday. Restore finished, so i have to soft reset. Soft reset, and it's erased again! I guess the 3rd time's the charm eh?
well maybe its a program you have installed on your phone or some file thats corrputed...
try this (maybe you already have?)
hard reset. use the reset dip switch in the battery compartment. activate it for about 3-5 minutes then deactivate it.
DO NOT BACK UP!! just use the phone normally without doing any installs or deletions, etc.. if it continues to act up then the phone is in need of repair and should be replaced.
pocket pc techs have an adapter that may work with it. i have an adapter that works well...
heh, i wish it were something as simple as that. Yeah, i tried doing a real hard reset several times and it might work for a while, but then would junk out after a soft reset. During one session of testing, it performed a hard reset when i actually did a soft reset 3 times in a row. That a reset, sync, restore, run for a while, test, etc.. then soft reset, BAM. gone. Did that 3 times in a row to verify it was a flaw and not software. So yeah, i ended up sending it back for replacement. It's probably arrived at the seller yesterday or so, so i expect a replacement will be in the mail shortly.
well, it took quite some time to get the replacement in and whatnot. The cool part was that it was shipped back to me with a second battery, so i have a replacement to charge and have handy if needed. Now, i just need to get it updated on my account and up and running. I went through several soft/hard resets on this model to make sure it is functioning properly. I haven't had a data loss like before, so this one appears to be working properly.
Okay, this has happened way too many times now. While I'm on the phone or turning on the screen, the damn thing just shuts off and resets itself to its factory state - deleting everything, phone contacts, programs, everything that isn't there by default. This happens at full battery life too. Is there another battery inside the phone like an internal lithium back-up battery that maybe needs to be changed? My G also gets a lot of unreceived missed calls that I don't receive up until an hour or more later - for instance if someone calls me at 5, and then later around say 7 when I turn on my screen - the time on my phone will still say 5 and then change to the current time of 7, and that is when my phone will update itself and show me what calls and text messages I received since 5...FREAKING ANNOYING, ESPECIALLY WHEN THE GIRLFRIEND BITCHES ABOUT ME NOT PICKING UP MY PHONE LIKE I MEANT TO IGNORE HER CALLS! Has anyone ever had these problems? I'm thinking about chucking this thing out the window while driving past the next bridge.
there is a backup battery that has probably failed and if your battery cover is lose it will cause rhe phone to shut down and therefore kiling your memory in the process....
are you the original owner? did you get it off eBay?
OR is it a refurb?
do you have rthe reset switch in the battery compartment?
if you are not the original owner then i would sale the phone and get something else or use your insurance on lockline (if you have it) and get another unit. this phone is no longer being supported by sprint or hitachi so finding suport for it other than this site is scarce.
yes other have had those issues as you would find out if you spend a little time and search the site...
