I am watching the video from my desktop webcam on the G1000 right now. Is there anyway to get the software to recognize the video camera built into our G1000?
It is really cool, but only one way it seems.
I might put an old junk computer and a webcam near a window so I can see video from my house from anywhere using the G1000.

The URL indicates that this is research code ... not product code. If Microsoft decides to move this research into product, they might pay attention ... but, the researchers may be too busy doing other things to make it compatible with the G.
I know this topic is kinda old, but I wrote Microsoft with ideas and suggestions about the product. I pressed the importance of camera support for the G. Just one day later I received a reply. That really surprised me.
Here's what they had to say about the camera on the G:

Hi Tom,
Thanks for your interest in Potrait and kindly suggestions.
We are investigating the feasibility of supporting the built-in camera in Hitachi G1000. Other suggestions are also helpful to improve the MS Portrait.
Thanks.

I hope they do support it. That would be very cool.
Ya they've been looking into it for a while now, I just hope they actually get it all working! Even 1 way video is cool with portrait, remember that 2 way audio works PERFECTLY, that alone makes it very cool!
Tom
agree d2!! this was a great find and i enjoy using this program. now that the driver for the cam is freely available lets hope they will implement it in a new update..
Q: Does Microsoft Portrait work with other cameras such as Lifeview FlyJacket, Pretec CompactCamera or Nexian NexiCAM?
A: The Pocket PC and Handheld PC version of Microsoft Portrait works with HP Jornada pocket camera, Pretec CompactCamera, Lifeview FlyCAM-CF camera, FlyJacket iCAM and Intermec 6651 built-in camera since Version 2.0. Microsoft Portrait does not work with Nexian Nexicam.
"FlyCAM-SD is a PDA camera compliant with SDIO Interface . It's the first SD-camera solution in the world with Flash Light and 1.3 Mega pixels. With the FlyCAM-SD you have the ability to take snapshots and record video.
It turns your PDA not only to a digital camera , but also to a Digital Camcorder.
Your can immediately watch your recorded video and send it out by e-mail. Or transfer them to your desktop PC, and watch them with the Microsoft Media Player."
..or perhaps videoconference with MS Portrait with a cool new digital camcorder...on the G?
..if it works, one could consider this a camera upgrade..image resolution is 1280X1024 and video is up to 30 fps and it comes with a flashlight!

After seeing the wi-fi and bluetooth cards and how far they stick out, it scares me because I am a bit clumsy and I just know I would snap the end off the card without trying.
"PPC version 2.21 has been released. It supports HP Photosmart Mobile Camera and Hitachi G1000 Pocket PC Phone Built-In Camera.
Both PC version 2.2 and PPC version 2.21 are compatible with the latest version of .NET Messenger Service. The PC version supports Microsoft Live Communications Server 2003 and other SIP servers. The PPC version supports full-duplex voice on Pocket PC 2003 and Smartphone 2003."
Can you explain exactly how does thing work. I had my wife connect herself in Messenger and I had my phone loaded with portrait but could not get it to work????

Ok, I was excited. I downloaded this. Installed it. And I cannot connect to someone's desktop via the ip address. So maybe I am doing something wrong. So let me explain the steps I used and see if we can figure out what I am not doing right.
Ok, I do not know how to initiate a network connection without loading IE. So I load IE which forces the network connection.
I already have Portrait loaded, and that might be the problem. I then enter the ip address of my friend and click connect. It then says connection and eventually times out.
My friend has turned on incomming calls. Any ideas?
I get chat and voice conversation working from G to G and G to PC no problem via .NET messenger service. Haven't tried IP direct yet. Showing video gives me a "video not support" error. Looks like there's something else needed to get video working properly.
yes you need msn update to use msn but YOU DO NOT NEED MSN MESSENGER RUNNING!!
have your friend cal you form their pc. if they are behind a firewall they will not receive your cal unless you open up a port for them. so go to your help/about screen on ms portrait and get the ip the phone uses.. give your friend your ip for your phone and you will get the call!
thats the main issue if you guys cant call someone form your phone. i have my ms p call my home server and open up my webcam, to view my studio. i have posted a screen capture of my G performing this function. this program works great.
if you guys need any more assistance, just say so here...
