Well dont understand what changed but I have now gotten this to work. I am able to have a session with my father who also has a g1000. Video was great and movement was not a problem. The audio was also very good but took some getting used to with the push to talk. This me be the best program I have used with the G. Thanks to all that helped to get it working.

Man, I have had nothing but problems with this. I have my MSN messenger associated to my G1000, so when I am offline you can send me an instant message and it comes thru as an SMS. After installing Portrait, after all the lockups that it caused, I finally thought I had it under control. I tried to send myself an instant message while I was not signed into messenger (comes thru as SMS) and my phone locked up. It locked up with the screen on, and the power button didn't do anything. After several hours, I finally took the battery out. I don't know what the deal is with my phone (probably not enough memory or something) but I just can't get portrait to work right. Seems like such an awesome program if I could get it to work.

this will only work with msn (its a microsoft product ya know )

we have msn already on the G so its no new software to install.

you can also use MP by itself... its a very nifty program...

Portrait

just loaded up the newest Portrait.
Having a devil of a time with the settings.
Can anyone help with the settings for the G and the desktop?
I have a new .net messenger loaded up and configured.
I know my hand-held's IP address. I know my PC's IP address.
I could not get the darned thing to talk to the PC or vice versa.

I am sure my settings are all messed up.

What are you all entering as the "standard" settings to get this thing to "accept a call" (I keep getting the "xyz is did not take your call" and "abd could not accept a call")

I have a simple linksys router/firewall. Nothing exotic.

Do I need to kill my security settings to get this to work? Any tips for the Linksys box's settings (if that is the problem...)

I'm guessing most of you have a firewall of this type (if not more complex) so this can't be the deal killer.
Thanks all
Matty

Ya if you are behind a linksys you need to port forward a couple of ports, it should be in the documentation of the PC version of Portrait but that's your problem... You SHOULD be able to initiate a call FROM your PC TO the G however, without changing the router's configuration...

Thanks Tom. Pardon the Homer Simpson, but I haven't had my second cup of coffee yet... "port forward a couple of ports" means doing something on the Linksys admin screens, correct? I'm not sure where to make the changes. I can get into the admin interface but I could use a bit of help as to which tab and which entry. Or is it something I need to do on the G?
I did not see anything in the MS Portrait instructions for the PC version.
Thanks again
Matty

Nothing you need to do on the G, and remember, this is ONLY so that you can get to your PC FROM your G, you should already be able to call the G from the PC... Anyway, it varies depending on which router you have but it's definitely in the advanced setup, you need to go to either forwarding or upnp, could even be something else, but basically you set 3 different entries, incoming tcp ports 8100, 8110, and 8120 to port forward to your internal IP, which is probably 192.168.0.x. Make sure you give your PC a static IP address first though or it won't work right. Again, I'd make sure you can call the G FROM your PC first, that should work regardless of you changing the router config...

So I power up Portrait on the PC. Messenger signs in "signed in .NET Messenger service" appears. I enter the IP address of the G.
The G is turned on, with the IE running and connected via Vision.
Portrait is running. "automatically accept calls" is checked.

As soon as the G is connected via Vision, the "buddy" list pops up on my PC (I have two .NET messenger accounts; one is on the PC and another is configured on the G. I "see" myself as signed-in from the MS Portrait on the PC.

"xxx.x.x.x did not accept your call" is the error message (my x's are in place of the G's IP address I got from the Help About from Portrait on the G.

When I click on the buddy: and press "call" (which seems like a much more elegant way to place a call) it says "your invitation has been sent to Matthew...

at the same time the G says "wating for a response from 192.168.1.100" which of course is the Linksys router's default outward-facing IP address.

On the PC the "your invitation has been sent to Matthew" seems to hang....

Nothing happening on the G. No pup up window, ring, anything.

Both the PC and the G say "not in a call"
Both are connected to the Internet.

when I press the "chat" button and see the dialog box from the PC, I can enter text and it pops up fine:
"you are chatting with Matt via .NET Messenger Service"

"Matt may not reply because he or she appears to be offline"
...but the PC is on line and so is the G.

The text that I entered came over fine. And nearly instantly.

When I thumb back a reply, it appears almost instantly on the PC's chat screen (Portrait).

So they can communicate via chat.

But when I press "Call"
the "your invitaiton has been sent to Matthew" comes up on the PC.

When I kill the G's Internet connection the "offline" status is instantly reflected on the PC.

When I boot Messenger first, then use Portrait (and enable it to sign in using .Net Messsenger, the same series of events happens... I can chat, and when I press "call" I get:
"calling matthew" and it also hangs there with the animated phone icon going round and round. Nothing happens on the G. The 192.168.1.1 comes up on the screen however. I wonder if I need to provision the proxy server setting on the "tools - Options - Network" tab in Portrait... As far as I know I have never had or used a proxy server however. Could this be the "port" concept that you were talking about?

any thoughts?

Hrm no proxies, I've never used a messenger service, I use Portrait and directly enter in the IP of the G, I think the G is getting your private IP from the messenger service and therefore can't connect. That's a pretty crappy bug by the sounds of it, try connecting directly via Portrait by typing in the G's IP when the G is connected, that SHOULD work...

yea just go to help on the G in portrait and you wil see your IP on the G.. use that to make the cal forem the pc. tom is rightr about the IP issue. i would not even use msn messenger to connect to MP . you wil get better service and fewer issues if you open up portrait first. THEN you can use your net messenger buddies,,,

Dear Marctronixx,

Mind sharing your overclocking settings? I am using PHM and 472 MHz seems slower than 400 MHz, especially for PIE. I am not sure what ram divisor to use and am wondering if the other overclocking program (which is easier to use) will work better for most apps.

hey jt,

i use XCPU scalar and i ramp it up to 472 and keep it there. i dont tweak any other settings nor do i use the auto scale feature. this seems to work well for me when i use MP. make sure you have the system clock to high speed. PIE and any other app that uses the internet to access data is dependent on the internets congestion and bandwidth so that could be the hold up you have when using PIE. i have not tested PIE when overclocked or non overclocked so i cant say if i see any speed differences...

Thumbs up

Got so fed up that I ditched the idea for a few days. Finally did get the PC to call the G, thanks for those tips.
Lots of issues w/image quality but it did connect, which is a victory. Audio was there too. Kind of remided me of a bug buzzing in my ear when I got too close to the room were the PC was- but I am supposing that is normal feedback.

Now to get back in the other way. From the G through the Linksys firewall into the PC. I have a call into my buddies at Linksys/Cisco. When I get the "seetings" from those guys I'll post them.

On the overclocking--- does that improve the image?

Thanks all--- and hope you're enjoying the weekend. If you're not on your G or on a laptop enjoying a view today... then GET OFF THE PC and GET OUT OF THE HOUSE!!!

cheers all

M

If you use MSN Messenger to create the call with Portrait, then you shouldn't need to make any configuration changes to the Linksys router. Since the Linksysy router is uPNP compatible, MSN Messenger can automatically configure the firewall to accept the incomming call.

overclocking would not make the image better... its a bandwidth/signal thang. MP uses quick a few clock pulses out of the processor so overclocking it can help...
