Myself and my wife have been into photography for a long time but that was only with various point and shoots. We just upgraded to a Canon Rebel DSLR and slowly are getting lenses.....someday hope to get some nice L-Lenses, but for know we're just enjoying learning more about photography in general
Like Mike already said, L is nice, but far from a requirement for good photos. I took some great photos long before i made the jump to some entry level L glass.
There's also some non-L lenses out there that take spectacular photos for a fraction of the price. one example would be the 85mm f/1.8. A great resource for lens reviews that helped me out alot has been www.fredmiranda.com
I have to cameras, one cheaper, older one with a 1gb memory card - this i use for general pics and fun - I take it everywhere with me. The other I use for arial photography - I can't remember the model names but I will find out and get back to you guys.
Have an old Manual F3 that I learned (a little) on. Borrowed a D70 from a friend and I liked it so much that I started reading the forums and decided to get a D200 with an 80-400VR for my son's football (just started High School). He plays mostly in daylight so the f4.5-5.6 works great. I know I'll probably break down and get a faster zoom as he starts playing night games in a year or two. Maybe I should have gone with a Cannon, but I have some old lenses from my F3 that I hated to part with.
Thats a great camera Andrew! I'm sure you will be excited to get it and try it out. Being that you live in PA, you may also want to checkout the new forum we started for photographers in the Northeastern US... NorthEastFoto.com ... it is a great place to discuss things as you are learning... a little more cozy than some of the larger forums.
Canon EOS Elan 7e N with an EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM lens, a EF-S 17-85MM f4-5.6 IS USM lens and a EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM lens. Looking to replace this with hopefully a 5D by the end of the year.
Also have a Canon PowerShot G6 and just picked up the other day a Canon SD630 for carrying around in my pocket. Great little camera by the way!
Needless to say I love Canon cameras. I have been using them for about 6 or 7 years now

I just picked up a Canon SD600 Elph (same as the 630 but a smaller lcd and the 600 adds a viewfinder). The picture quality really has surprised me. Great camera that fits in a pocket and goes everywhere. Next on the shopping list is the WP-DC4 Waterproof Case. Then it really CAN go just about anywhere.
I just ventured off and found this thread how neat. I just got rid of my old huge honkin sony cybershot dscf707 and got myself a Rebel xt., I also have a SD450 Powershot digi elph. I am pretty happy with switching to Canon they are very nice I am still learning how to use the Rebel, I need some more equipment I hope I get a lens for xmas I will keep an eye out for this part of the forums now

WOW! Get out my camera bag! I shoot with the same gear! I bought the camera as an open box special. It was the Rebel XT Kit with the 18-55mm lens. Thats when they were selling for $999. The guy that returned had buyers remorse. I was in the customer service line when he returned it. He had purchased it the same day and his wife made him return it. I asked the manager do they send them back to the manufacturer or do they sell them. he said they sell them as an open box special. I asked how much? He said $679. I couldn't pass it up. I was going to buy one new in a few months anyway. So I couldn't pass it up. I bought my lens and speedlite gear from Amazon.
I also have a P&S (Sony Cybershot DSC s600) to carry around when i don't want to lug the other gear around.

When buying new camera gear, check out http://www.bhphotovideo.com. They are probably the best company, in service, knowledge, and price. I have been buying all of my gear from them, and they have always been right around the lowest price, and if I can find it cheaper, from a reputable source, they will match it, however, they generally have the best price, and even for a bit more, they are worth it.
Check them out when going for new gear, and congrats on the cheap Rebel.

I shoot with a Canon 1DIIN and 30D for sports and a Nikon D200 for everyday and a D50 for work. Got a whole bunch of different lenses,
A dual-brand photographer... what a rare breed you are.
Interesting that you are using a D50 for work, and much more capable equipment for pleasure... if I read you right. I shot Nikon for about 20 years and switched 2 years ago to Canon. My primary cameras are the Canon 1DIIN bodies, but I also have a 20D and 5D to cover the other sensor sizes. I'm looking forward to availablity of the MIII.
Yes, that's right. I shoot for fun for the Univ of Hawaii football booster club. Hence the 1DIIN and 30D. I just like the D200 for everything else. I was using Nikon for football too but the high ISO noise was just too bad, so I switched to Canon for those shots. Since I don't need much resolution or fancy controls for my work, a D50 is sufficient.
