Headset adapter?

Has anyone been able to make or buy a headset adapter to interface between HTC's proprietary connector and a standard 2.5 or 3.5 mm plug?

The inability to use my headphones for music and my headset for calls is a show-stopper. Bluetooth is not a viable substitute because it is not allowed on airplanes or in secure working environments (not to mention the cost, hassle, and signal loss).

I found one on ebay. It ships from a company in China. The first one didn't work but they were quick to replace it with a working model. It works the same as the earphones with a volume and mic and takes any 3.5mm headphone set.
