I know you can pay verizon another $15 a month to tether, but wondering if anyone has figured out a way without it, smilar to what they are doing with the Pocket PCs and smarthphones.
I previously had an XV6700, which would connect via windows DUN with no problem. Yesterday I bought the 8130, and after setting it up as a modem, it would fail to connect at the username/login part of the Dial up.
I called Verizon to see if I had set it up correctly etc. and the Tier 3 technician told me that the old PDAs had a security issue that was now "fixed" in all their new devices. You now need to enter a username and password, and it will check to see if you've subscribed to the tether option.
To prove it, and just to check to see if I'd set the 8130 up correctly, he tinkered with a setting on his end, and when I retried, I got through just fine.
Bummer, but it looks like they've locked it down on their end. I'll refrain from ranting on why if your already paying $50 a month for the unlimited data plan, they want another $15 a month to remove this limit.
I suppose, it's faster than dial-up, and about the same price as paying for a monthly dial-up ISP as a contingency plan. But I'm still not pleased about it.
seems they locked it down with the new samsung 760 - had no probelms with teh 730. However, with the 760, they are reporting sucess with the software pdanet. Need to find the equivalent for the blackberry. I only use it once or twice a month at best so the $15 is ridiculous.
If anyone has any way to tether an 8130 thru Verizon, please let me know. I currently use pdanet with an sch-i760 and it works perfectly. I don't feel that $15/month is justified since I only dial up through my phone....maybe once a month when I travel for an hour or so. I'm already paying $45/month for the data services.
I too am waiting for the answer to this having the need for this also at most 1x a month and not willing to pay the $15 extra. I am also now on the 760, having just upgraded from the 730 (insurance repalcment) which as you may be aware, we were able to tether using dial codes. Don't know if you are coming from the 730 and can tell me how you find the speed with pdanet. As soon as I can feel comfortable that there is a solution for the pearl, I would like to switch to that.
No, I came from a Moto Q > SCH-I760 and I'll be testing out the blackberry for a few days to see how well I like it. The SCH-I760 is extremely functional but I don't like how big and bulky it is and I'm not very happy with Windows Mobile, it crashes for me too often. But pdanet works very well for Windows Mobile. Just do a google search for it, you can do a trial of it for 30 days and then it costs $35 to purchase it. It installs as a program on your computer and works thru activesync. Once activesync is connected (works excellent via bluetooth BTW), you can then dial up through pdanet and I usually get speeds above 1mb. I test out the speed by going to speedtest.net And I don't have to pay the $15/month. If I used this more often, I would have no problem paying that monthly fee but I use it at most for an hour a month. So I can't justify $15/month for that little of use. I have yet to find a program that will work like PDANet for a blackberry though. I did hear of one called Shark Mobile or something like that but their site is completely down so I don't know if it's still around or not. Anyone have anything that works or will I end up having to go to a Treo 700P. I also like Palm as it's more stable than Windows Mobile but I hate the antenna on the 700P and Verizon doesn't seem to want to release the 755P
I had heard about sharkmodem as well. Seems like the blackberry forum here is basically dead, so posted a few messages in the blackberry and crackberry formums to see if anyone was familiar with it and never heard from anyone. I'd be curious to see what you find out. Also curious, are you using BES or BIS to get your email and sync your pim info?
I don't currently have a pearl yet. I went back to my Q for a little bit because I'm having issue with low reception on my sch-i760. The Q does what I need to, but it crashes and locks up OFTEN. That's why I'm wanting to move to the Pearl. But with my Windows Mobile, I use it when traveling or as a backup internet service. I use it so little though, I don't feel justified with paying $15/month extra on top of the $44.95 I'm already paying for data service. I just got the mobishark.com website working again so I downloaded the trial. My pearl should arrive next week so I can test it on. I just want a phone that doesn't lock up me several times a week and does what I need it to (store a full phone book & calendar, allows me to send/receive email and connect to my laptop for high speed internet when I need it). Apparently, that's asking a lot.
