Larry - I'm in the same boat you are...coming off the i730. Not in love with the i760. Want something smaller and more reliable (read not windows mo) to keep email, calendar, contacts sync'ed. I spoke w/ my store rep yesterday, and he stated that bb has it's own version of wireless sync to keep the cal, contacts, notes etc. updated. But in typical fashion, he didn't know the name of the software and hadn't used it/ever seen it.
TCM - one thing for sure, doesn't look like you will find much support here like for the 760. The verizon reps in the store seem to know very little - but we all new that. Actually called tech support and from I could find out, you are right, there is an equivalent of active sync to sync the phone and outlook. however, and i'm still trying to confirm all this so don't take this as gospel, that's only when physically connected. If you don't have an exchange server and can run the blackberry excahnge server, the only wireless syncing will be of email. Contacts, appointments etc. will sync when your back in the office/home and physically connect. Actually went to AT&T to play with the phone for a while and while its not the exact same phone as verizon - beleive att is the origial pearl and verizon is the pearl2, think I might be able to get use to the small keyboard. Guess by next weekend we will be able to hold side by side and play. But again, no apparent 760 forum like support.
Got off the phone with VZW tech support (a wonderful way to spend my extra hour ). Here's what I found: without the use of an exchange server/service BB's will not sync wirelessly contacts, calendar, notes, tasks. The only way to sync these will be with the wire to the computer. Email will take a completely different path, using BB's email service. (My understanding of it is that you forward your email to your BB email address and it pushes to the phone.) I really need to get my calendar and contacts to sync wirelessly. Have you or anyone else used a pay by month exchange service?
well you pretty much did and foudn out the same thing I found out when I called in my prior email. The only addtinal thing is I wasn't aware that i had to forward my email. Seems a bit strange - what your saying if i understand is that I basically have to create a rule in outlook to forward all emails. Which would mean any email I receive, would be forwarded and in effect, come from me....so when I hit reply, I would be replying to myself. Are you sure about that...obviously not the way the wireless sync client works if you are using the 730 with pop mail and no excahnge server.
And no..I haven't used a pay by month excahnge service, be curious to find out if anyone has and their results. As it is, it also seems like the verizon bb plans are going to cost at least $20 more compared to my current plan
Don't quote me on the need to forward your email. The V rep I spoke to could have also made the case that bb's get your email to you faster through a network of fairys and pixi dust. Of all the bb users I have talked to, they have never mentioned the forwarding problem, so either I'm off base or bb has a fix. Either way could be true. The point of the story is, after extensive research, bb will get email to you fast and easy but calendar, contacts etc will be difficult. The more I look into it, the more of a pain in the rump this seems compared to WinMo & wirelessync (minus the device lockups, resets, and general unresponsivness). I'll post back once I speak with an exchange server service.
Interesting about the price. The in-store reps I have spoken to stated it would be a straight swap - one data plan for the other....
I just moved over from WinMobile to BlackBerry. There are two service options, BlackBerry Enterprise Service (BES) or BlackBerry Individual Service (BIS).
BES can go a few routes but most likely are you connect via your corp BES Server and sync or you can connect via one of the services out there that offer Exchange Server/BES Server packages so you can use Outlook and then sync via exchange server and your data will sync with the BES Server on the other end. I looked at this option and it adds up.
BIS should be coming with your service option from Verizon on the AT&T side they several options and they charge extra for BES customers vs BIS customers. So I have all of my email address's sync with my BIS account, the result is my mail arrives on my BB's as it arrives on my email accounts.
So if you are looking for a low cost solution then BIS you can sync contacts, calendar and email at home. BES costs more but you get full 2 way sync.
If you or your company do not have a BES you can still synch your outlook mailbox wirelessly using the desktop manager software and setting up the redirector feature. The only drawback is that you must leave your computer with your outlook account on in order for this to work.
Now since VZW split the BB data plans up i'm not sure which one you will need. But when you install BB DM you will be given the option to set up the redirector......give it a shot and see if that will meet your needs.

BB Desktop Manager will not sync your contacts or your calender. Also--you will not get any attachments using this method. Here are the service options in order of features
Desktop Mgr--sync calendar and contacts via wire or bluetooth and will forward mail to your handheld--no attachements. Requires PC to be running all the time.
BIS--will forward all mail including attachments, but will not sync contacts or calendar. Only will get inbox--no other folders. NO PC needed--all hosted by BB.
BES--will get all mail, folders, contacts and calendar wirelessly and will update both ways realtime--requires hosted Exchange server and BB Enterprise server, or your own exchange box and your own BB enterprise server running on it. By far the best way and the most work. If you host your own e-mail this is the way to go since BB Enterprise server Express is free from BB for 1 user.
I just got the Pearl 8130, and am coming from the Samsung i730, so it's a big step. Giving it a chance for 2 more weeks before deciding...
The phone is great, a real jewel. But now to the nitty-gritty:
Since I don't want to leave my PC on all the time, that desktop remote syncing doesn't help me, but I do get mails on my BB from some accounts. You just fill in your username and password in the on-phone setup. That's it. Pretty cool, and there is no forwarding from Outlook necessary.
I didn't think push was really that important, but I can tell you, it's pretty cool, and handy when you are out and about or rebooting your PC (I use Windows)
Those pushed mails have no cost to me, since I have the unlimited data plan.
The included Desktop 4.3 needs to communicate with Outlook 2002 or later (or other PIMs), unless you use the Desktop version 4.2 sp2, which can use Outlook 2000. The question is, will Desktop 4.2 sp2 talk to the phone's 4.3x OS?
I'm still deciding about which way to go on that.
But I am still not synced with my PC! Desktop install gives me an unknown error.
There is plenty of support around: Crackberry.com, Pinstack.com, etc...
Need to solve this now.
