It's not available for the Thera, according to what I've read and since PPC2003 is customized for each PDA model, you would need one specifically created for the Thera.
I did hear a rumour about Verizon having the upgrade but have found no evidence of that.
If you know of the source for PPC2003 that is specifically for the Thera, please let everyone know where to find it.
ATTENTION !
The formal release of a Pocket PC 2003 edition of WatcherTM is in development. This software patch is provided as an interim measure to provide service to our customers.
With this patch, you are able to use a Pocket PC 2003 device with the AirCard 555 Wireless Network Card to make a high-speed packet data connection. However, you cannot create your own connection profiles.
This patch creates a connection profile called "FIFO1X" that is used for high-speed packet service.
Pocket PC 2003 support involves installing the existing Pocket PC 2002 Watcher and subsequently applying the provided patch.
Fully install Pocket PC 2002 Watcher according to the instructions and procedures for the AirCard 555 for your service provider.
Following the installation of the Pocket PC 2002 edition:
Select the Download Now button to access the executable patch.
From the File Download window that appears, select the option to, "Save this Program to Disk" and click OK.
In the Save As dialog box, in the "Save in" field, select Desktop. Leave the File name unchanged. Click Save.
On the desktop of the host computer, double-click the downloaded file (AC55X_PPC2003Patch.exe) to open the WinZip Self-Extractor.
Click Unzip to extract the installation files into a new folder on the desktop and automatically execute the installation.
A new "Installing Applications" window opens. Choose Yes and Ok.
Using ActiveSync, connect your Pocket PC 2003 device to the host computer.
The update will be detected and transferred to the Pocket PC.
Disconnect your Pocket PC from the host.
Insert the AirCard 555 into your Pocket PC.
The Pocket PC is now ready to communicate with the AirCard. Start the Watcher software using the Windows Start > Programs menu.
OK, this is only for upgrading the Sierra Wireless modem firmware to make it compatable with PPC2003.
Where do you get the actual PPC2003 upgrade for the Toshiba 2032 (Audiovox Thera) PDA from? One of the writers for Mobile Computing Magazine said that Toshiba was not going to release it for the E570, which basically means that it won't be coming to the Thera very soon.
The information you provided IS good for those in Canada who purchased the Thera through Tigerdirect. At least they can install the correct firmware for the SB555.
After re-reading my original document, I decided to clarify some points and add a new part reference (MAX3232). You should now be able to build a serial interface cable powered by the PDA and re-using an inexpensive 4 wire USB cable. (All you need is Gnd, TX & RD for most uses). I'm still working on drawing the schematics.
Please remember to always TEST any circuits you build BEFORE connecting them to your PDA.
Why can't we install any PC2003 update and reinstall the software and driver for watcher for the phone to work. All the software and drivers is included on the seirrawireless website for all versions of Verison, Sprint, Bell ect....

Does anyone have a PC 2003 update I can use.
Because the architecture for a Toshiba PDA is different from an HP PDA which is different from a DELL PDA. Each manufacturer uses custom ASICs to reduce the parts count for these toys. A good example is the 'FAIRY' chip that the Toshiba E570 uses that interfaces between the ARM uP and the LCD. HP has their own versions of interface ASIC.
If you try to use an HP PPC2003 release on a Toshiba, you could end up with a brick. I've been reading that HP also replaces the bootloader in their flash. Another problem is that you will most likely just get an error trying to run the HP install on your Toshiba. Why? Because the HP app checks to make sure you are installing it on an HP PDA.
Now, you could try to disassemble the installer and pull out all of the PPC2003 modules, strip out the HP specific ones then re-package them into what you need for the Toshiba, but where will you get the Toshiba specific modules that interface to the Toshiba hardware? Not worth the time and effort.
And if you really want a flash image, just go to the HP support website and download one. http://h18000.www1.hp.com/support/fi...OsCat/105.html
Just make sure it's for an ARM based PDA with a 32MB flash. The Thera was probably flashed through it's JTAG interface on the uP board.
I agree with Dude. They should make the opp. system generic like windows for a pc. That way everybody would be elligable for upgrades regardless of the mfg.
Ideally, yes. But unfortunately, you're dealing with profit motivated entities that make money by keeping their products different and proprietary.
HP (Compaq) is good in that they publish the specs for their PDAs. Toshiba hides everything.
I'm still trying to figure out how to flash the Thera myself. The original flash apps used the CF card, for which the slot is absent on the Thera. That leaves the SD, USB, JTAG and serial interfaces. For JTAG, you need special hardware and need to know where the connections are on the main PCB. This is what is used in the factory. The others need a special bootloader to function properly and I have not found how to enable it, if it even exists on the Thera.
Call me crazy but I just came up with a wild idea......wondering if I can take apart my Toshiba E800 and put a Maestro CDMA modem in the E800's CF slot.
Somehow get the Phone Edition software for CDMA flashed and watcher loaded to run on a E800.

Anyone got ideas?
Read through my posts of what I've found so far and you'll see that the 40 pin connector in the Thera is NOT a CF interface. It's a dual serial interface with a couple of audio I/O and control lines.
As I here the new version of Pocet PC 2004 (version 5.0) is coming out this summer. It will work on all models of PDA's becuase it will include all drivers.
This way we will not have to rely on the manufacture to come out with there version for PocketPC with drivers.
Here is the info from the home page from pdaphonehome.
Microsoft Announces Preview of Windows CE Version 5.0
by dwdod - 03-29-2004 08:10 PM
On March 29th, 2004, Microsoft Corp announced that it is making available a "technology preview kit" for Windows CE version 5.0. This preview kit will be available on April 1st on the Microsoft Windows embedded web site.
One of the significant changes in this version of the OS is that it will include more than 50 drivers optimized for a variety of chip sets, including the ARM Processor, MIPS Processors, the SuperH Processor from Hitachi Ltd, and Intel Corp.'s x86 family of chips. According to Microsoft, this will allow manufactures to use drivers straight out of box rather ahan having to customize them for a particular hardware environment.
The new release of Windows CE also provides built-in support for dual-mode mobile phones which can make high-speed data connections on both cellular and wireless LAN networks. The new software also includes increased support for voice-over-IP (VOIP) telephony.
Version 5.0 of Windows CE is due for release this Summer.
Well everyone, this will be my last post in here...:`(
It was a nice ride, but all good things come to an end...
Verizon is conducting an audit that will take affect over the next couple of weeks. Turns out alot (too many) VZ reps made a big mistake when signing people up for the so called (PPC plan)
In this plan you were able to use the express network using your exsisting minutes.. This meant that if you had unlimited nights and weekends, you had free high speed inet via your thera. This is what originally "sparc'ed" my intrest for getting the Thera to work as a modem with the laptop/PC. I called VZ the other day to inquire about a charge on my bill and then before I hung up they stated that they were conducting an audit that would remove a certain "product plan code" on all accounts who had this mistaken code added to their plan, which would then remove the ability to use Express Network in conjuction with our monthly minute allowance.
For all who know me (TWisT) I raised hell. I went on about misrepresentation, the fact that this viods my current contract renewal, the whole ten yards!
In the end I was prompted the option to get 50% of the phones net value (from the time of purchase) refunded to me and my current contract receinded. If you all have this same problem or CS gives you a problem about compensating you for thier mistake, just remind them about their "Worry Free Guarantee". I hope it works out in the end for everyone else!!
I really dont understand how they can give us this service and then just take it away from us...(and get away with that)!!??
Not sure if TWiST and all you guys will still continue to research this Thera, but if you do Good Luck and farewell!!
Don't go ! Stick around. You never know what may pop up.
Personally, I purchased the unit to play (read: HACK) with as I already have a company-paid cell phone. There are always intersting ideas that other poeple come up with.
As far as VZ goes, the only real action one cold take is against the reps that signed you up, unless they were given incorrect info from the head office. That's $$$ you don't really want to spend though and it's probably better to just get as much as you can back and have the contract cancelled. There are newer phones out there that are much better and cheaper.
Ive been so busy with hacking windows longhorn and hacking with my toshiba e805 PocketPC ive, and now the fact that I do not have a data cable for my thera, is making it very difficult to do anyting hacking wise to it. I have some stuff ive been experimenting with but now I cant do any testing until I get another data cable.
Get a cheap USB data cable from the same guy I purchased from. look at the doc I posted above. The name is in it. He's on eBay. Cable is $5 and shipping is $6. The connector has all the pins so you can play
the reason verizon can do it and get away with it is because reguardless of the show the fcc and antitrust people put on for everyone, its still a monopoly, plain and simple they still own everything and they can do that.

alls i want to do is turn the freggen thing into a clone of my sprint phone without talking to sprint about it without deactivating my current phone, just because. i have unlimited everthing with my carrier thanx to my office, who purchased some freaky plan from a company that gives us unlimited everything for a flat rate through regualr carriers, like sprint or verizon, i told my boss use sprint cause i hate the evil empire known as verizon<<(as you can see i have some unresolved issues), personally i want to take advantage of that wireless g3 technology, put that to use. i wanna hear more from the people who posted about ESN emulators, that sounded promising
