Why is it we are permitted to make tasks private?

Only a locked icon appears, but there seems to be no functionality assigned to this state. Can you mask private tasks????

Although not thru this post, I've managed to get an answer (though not the one I was looking for).

It appears that when connected to a shared network, PRIVATE fields will assume their space but not display content to other users.
