ok here is waht i think how this pda works.
feel free to correct me if i am wrong.

builtin storage is 32mb
main memory is 32mb
thats 64mb of ram part of the pda

the rom part of the pda is devided in 2 as well if u go into the hardware test menue u can see the flash id 1 and flash id 2.
meaning it has 2x 32mb rom

i think flash 2 is the "extended rom" there some posts on this at xda developers.

some of the operating system's files are on the rampart of the pda. i am guessing the files that dont require updates or frequent updates are located on rom where as the others are located int he ram portion

the sound tes t is awsome i love it.. remionds me of ghetto old atari games.

Okay.. I know you thought I fell off the face of the earth.. but no.. here I am.. I have been very busy at work with the girlfriend, ect, ect... Btw, I got the new Audiovox SMT5600 smartphone... It is very cool. Still use my ppc4100 for pda and for bigger jobs as a Smartphone is not a Pocket PC. Okay... lets run down what I have done... I have edited the rom via hexeditor and been able to change bmp files within it. I now have my own operator pics that don't reset with a hard reset. However, the ril.gsm isnt' in there. Now I have read thats because in the rom form you can only access certain types of files.

So now to xda tools... Problems... we don't have files we need to compile....

Next I tried Microsoft platform builder to build a new rom for the device with old files but it doesn't support that type of rom so it can't open it.

Next... I have tried to flash 2003WM to the device but it failed... Why... well I think its because its in xda format...

Next I have tried looking like you guys on the anextek site and for a rom update for the anextek sp230 in hopes of disassembling it but no avail... Has any one tried backing up the rom using xda tools and then restoring it?

I have also found a tool that is supposed to save the bootloader and it saved it to my device but is it in the proper format?

Anyways.. thats all I have done....

And I knew about the diagnostics test.... Sorry I forgot to mention it...

Anyways... I have followed with the post...

Will talk to you guys later,

John

I have also tried on the extended rom thing, however I cannot find out anything.. I tried running the different tools for the xda and neither the unlock app for the Pocket PC nor the commandline utilities through dos prompt can find extended rom storage.

I did back mine up. I have not flashed it back yet. I uploaded my back-up in the same ftp dir where faramisimo uploaded his.

What files are we missing to build a Rom with XDA tools?

I dumped the ROM off my PDA, but the only format it will dump as was *.bin I have attempted to write it back using the same program but it didn’t allow it.

question.
is the ROM image written to the PDA as it is just one file and the PDA interprets it as an array of files? or does it extract the files ?

The extended ROM might not be accessible but doesn’t mean its not there. in the diag. menu it shows flash 1 and flash 2.

Conclusion
When writing to the PDA the ROM file is first copied to the extended ROM. Then extracted (installed) to the main ROM

The operator file is missing from compiling an image. Hey John nice to have you back, do u have an operator sample file from an xda image? Perhaps we can work on writing another one for the ppc4100. windows is made to be generic so i don’t see y it would be different for different Pocket PC’s and I don’t see y an xda image wont work on the ppc4100 we just have to make sure it’s an nb1 and without the bootstrap.

Hey Jon u said u had a 2005 image what format was that? and did u try to flash it on the pda?

I say lets find a good windows 2003 SE image nb1 format and take it apart to see how different it is from what we have. I am playing with the rom kitchen on xda dev.

lets not fill the ftp too much. it belongs to xda developers. we dont want to piss them off. we are not even using their site
we should sum up everything and post it there maybe they will aknoledge the ppc4100 as worthy to be on their site.

ok.. everyone. EVERYBODY thats reading this thread or is even slightly interested in this please go to http://forum.xda-developers.com/view...=117978#117978
post on how u would like to see a section for the 4100 appear on xda developers.

how will this benefit you?
1- you will have experts feedback on your silly comments.
2- many of the xda developments are compatible with the 4100
3 - u will start to see more tools that are compatible with your pda.
4- JUST DO IT!!! OK?

extended rom access

i think the xda use serial to connect to the pda. we use usb, thats probably the reason u cannot access the extended rom using xda tools.

i amnot sure.
i was looking at the roms that comes fromxda and they are made by htc wahtever that is. i searched inthe rom for htc i found a few instances in the xda rom and in the audiovox rom aswell
that might be a coincident not sue

i also was looking at the 2003 and the 2005 roms from xda they have a password that u have to run it through this program called xda2nbftool.exe and us e a password that looks like this 20 04 03 04

now if u look closly on those roms u will find where there should be 00's it has that password as a pattern in the file.
and when u run it through the file it removes the pattern and u end up with the decrypted rom then u can extract it with dumprom

ten i looked at the audiovox rom that is available on the net i extracted the fie there is a pod file in there it also has a pattern but the patten is 16 bites long and the tool mentioned above as far as i know only works with 4 bite pattern

if we can dycrypt and encrypt the audiovox pod file we will be able t edit it and write it back using usb

but then i thought we have access to write this using the sd card method and its decrepted so that might be an easier apporoch. butif u do mess up theboot loader uwi endup with a vegie for a pda.

ihave tried to flash windows on my pda with 2003 and 2003 se but it doesnt boot up. i dont want to change the bootloader because i dont really know if it willwork or not.

ROM kitchen on 4100

I've been following this thread with great interest. I had a real tech savvy SunCom VP tell me to "go forth on the web" for instructions on how to flash my ROM and give my phone the look and fell I want. He told me I could get it unlocked in the process so I could use it on their system. I'm migrating from ATTWS to SunCom. Other techs have told me that unless I can get the phone unlocked, I will not be able to migrate to their system.

Anyway, nemo and faramismo have been working hard on cooking a ROM for the 4100. Any luck so far?

As far as I am concerned, life took over and I made no progress. Besides I will soon be changing the ppc4100 for something else. I am in the process of switching from ATT to Suncom too. Everytime I call I am told something different. All I figured out is that I will be receiving another phone. So far I have been offered a Treo 650, but the manager of the store next to my house said they will be receiving a win-based pda-phone at the beginning of July, so I am holding on to the ppc4100 for now.

If I were you I'd take advantage of the free phone offer. I wouldn't want to get stuck with a phone that is not supported and get into a nightmare every time I have to call support.

If the savy VP next time tells you were on the web you can find instructions on how to flash the ROM, please let us know! My impression is that he wasn't as savy as he posed

well, i have put in alof of work in this. i have extracted many ros checked ot the rom kitchen and some others.

now there is the xda and the xda 2 not sure what the mda3 is. i have extracted many of the roms that are on that webste and they seem to look very similar. the thing is i amnot sure what will happen if i updated the boot loader and i am afraid to do so cuz it might end the use of the pda.

i flashed a 2005, 2003 se and a 2003 roms to my pda but none of them did bot after finished flashing i ambeginning to lose hope.

what bothers me is that most of the cabs that re coded for the xda phones do work for he 4100. i think i will be geting a phone with a broken screen andmight use the hardware of that to fash the bootloader to see if it will ork ornotandif it doesntthen oh well

about unlocking it. sure its available the file u canget from many places on the net
its available on this site.

so far i am able to change the boot up screen if anyone wants to know how to let meknowi iwll post the how to for that
other than that everything else has to wait until someone reveals the secret

cheers

Nemo,

What store are you talking to? No one has mentioned a new phone to me. They just tell me to get the phone unlocked. Can you please put me in touch with that manager?

Thanks!

they are probably talking about the xda phones. he might be under the impression its the same base phone. the new phone is most likely the new ipaq.

The customer representative at the phone always told me that there is no way they can unlock my phone, so they will be giving me another one. Some offered me the Treo 600, others told me to go to the store and get the Treo 650, another one told me that they don't have a replacement and it's my problem. Like I said, every time I call I get a different version.

The store is the one on 54 in Durham, NC, zip 27713 if that helps. The manager was quite knowledgeable. At least he's the only one I spoke to so far who recognized the ppc4100 at first sight and knew the difference between a palm-base and a win-based pda-phone.
