It seems the concensus is that the quality of the 4100 is still questionable. Quality is the main reason why I am still hesitating to buy one. I think I will wait and read more comments before I commit myself.
I am looking into the navigation software. my issue, well what I'm questioning is the storage..
I put on Pocketstreets, I put on some L.A. maps, but if I put on tomtom or something, where the heck will I store the mas.... I'm short on storage as it is..
Mine went back last Friday. The deal killer for me is the lack of a standard button layout. This unit is almost impossible to use one handed. I've decided I'm giving up on the PPC phone. No one can seem to make a unit that makes sense. All the technology they pack into these things and they can't even put standard PPC buttons on them.
I bought the PalmOne Treo 600 with GSM. So far, I'm glad that I did. Hands down it's a "smarter" smartphone. Easy to use one handed, quad band, 6 hour battery life. It does what I need a smartphone to do. PalmOne was quick to update the OS on the system, unlike Samsung with the I700 and I600. Perhaps when the the MPX is out, I'll go back to a PPC phone. It looks like a sensible unit both size and keyboard. If not, I'll stick with my Treo600. OS argumments aside, it's the best smartphone hardware available.

Ascii stupid question, get a stupid Ansi.
I am coming to a similar conclusion. Maybe time to throw up our hands and buy 2 devices. I am thinking of the Asus A730 when it comes with WiFi and BT. This convergence thingy is just not happening. the compromises are too glaring. Decide which one you want more a PDA or a phone and decide accordingly. I lean towards the PDA endof the spectrum but i need a functional mobile phone.
Well...I have had a lot of fun with this and as they say..the fat lady just finished her song!!!!!. returning this unit AM tomorrow.
Main Reasons..
1. Dropped calls..I am sure there are some states and or cities GSM is better than CDMA, unfortunately I live on the West Coast and VZW DOES have excellent service(not-tech support )
2.It is DEFINITELY not a one-handed user-friendly device.
Things that I would have overlooked if I were to keep it
1. battery life...at least better than the Thera!!!
2.stupid headset.
3.very flimsy cradle set-up.
4.odd way of trying to get the unit out of the case...kept dropping the stylus.
5. If AT&TW gave it free with a two-year contract !!!!.

Funny it worked.....the last time!!Now I am not sure what was working before they put a hole in my head!!!!
I purchased the phone yesterday. I got mine for $300.00 btw! I will be returning the phone, not so much because I don't like it but because the iPaq 6310 is coming out soon (so everyone buzzes). For $300 it's not so bad though.
I haven't used the headset yet.
The battery life seems to be acceptable to me.
You can charge the phone independent of the sync cradle.
Phone coverage for me has been excellent so far (in the DFW area).
Issues I have with this phone:
1. Stylus is not secure in it's slot. It comes out too easy.
2. No external button that is programmable.
3. The manual talks about "single hand use" with the jog dial, but I find no way to access contacts or notes, etc. without touching the screen first. You would think that when the jog dial is first pushed in that it would bring down the start menue and then jog down for choices, but no.
4. When I pull the phone out of the carrying pouch that came with it, the stylus can start to slide out and also the rubber headphone jack flap pops open.
5. Equus is right, the cradle setup is VERY flimsy.
