Introduction and Preface
Let me open this review by stating that this is the first formal review that I have ever written for a PocketPC, so if I miss something important please let me know and I'll try to fill in the gaps. Before I get to the core of the review,...
I am not sure how FCC filing go but I was told this is because i700 phone was going to be a Sprint only phone way in the begining. Don't ask me why VWZ released first but who knows. If someone who has a current phone could try and make a phone call when they are in a true analog roam we could get to the bottom of this.
Yesterday, and after 1.5 hrs and speaking with 6 reps @ Verizon, I was finally able to speak with someone that would order the phone for me.
Since I already have Verizon service, the phone is $729.99!!!! Does anyone think this is just a bit too high?
I heard a rumour from one rep that there might be special upgrade plans, but neither he or anyone else was able to verify.
At the least, they should let you out of the old contract and into then new one with the 1 or 2 yr plan. Afterall, there are more services that I would use with this phone than with my old simple one!
What experiences have others had... is everyone paying $729.99?
Anyone know when Sprint is going to be releasing the phone??
1. The OS has been modified so that the battery status icon is displaying in the taskbar
2. The soft button config of the phone is different. This one has a talk and end button, not shared, and the call and speed dial buttons have been moved down. This makes for an issue when trying to skin the dialer as all other dialer skins are made the normal way.
3. What's the other notification icon in the second screenshot?

I am sorry to hear you already bought the phone at that price. All you have to do is tell them that you will sign ANOTHER 1 or 2 year contract (whichever you choose). They will then start your new contract on the current date. In effect canceling out your old contract and starting a new contract.
That is what I did and have done in the past everytime I bought a new fancy phone from them.
Since you already bought the phone for 730.00 I am not sure if you can get a refund.

How long have you been in your current contract? You sign a contract when you buy a phone with Verizon because they're subsidizing part of the cost of the phone. Because of this they're picky about letting you out of a contract early.
Now, according to when I found on their site, you can upgrade your equipment after 10 months on a 1 year, or 22 months on a 2 year contract by signing a new one, however you will not qualify NewEveryTwo deal.
It seems really expensive even at the discounted prices.
$599 as a discounted price is too expensive?? I personally think it's a good value considering that you also get a phone and a camera. But it's not for everyone.

Yes, I definitely believe it's too expensive. A good Pocket PC costs $300 or $400 and an Express Network phone costs around $50. That's a lot less than $600. I don't know how to price a 1/3 megapixel camera that takes fuzzy pictures. It's hard to find one of those standalone these days.
Don't get me wrong. It sounds like an excellent product and the perfect choice for someone who wants a converged model. I just think $600 is too much.
It is a little pricier than I'd like to spend, but hey... if you want to get one early its going to cost a little more. If you want something for less, the T-Mobile Pocket PC Phone Edition can usually be had for $299 at Amazon... and its a great pdaPhone. No camera and less memory, but otherwise pretty capable.
Cell phones are a weakness for me, and when a new one comes out that has something I want I have to be the first to buy it. This is the third cell phone I have purchased right after it was released. It all started back in 1998 with my Nokia 6120 through CellularONE. Digital service was so new in the area that the salesperson had to call customer service to get pricing for their digital plans.
Then there was my trusty old v60, which I was one a small handful of suckers who shelled out $425 for one of those babies which now regularly sell for about $80 in stores now.
Being first to own a device like this is a priviledge to me, and of course with that comes the price. I don't doubt that within 6 months you'll see it going for $499 with a 2 year contract. I still think that compared to some of the higher end PocketPC's the i700 is an exceptional value. Hopefully you'll be able to join us i700 owners someday soon.
I just ordered mine today from Telesales (after about 5 failed calls). My new-every-2 anniversary date is in August, but I just asked the salesperson to ask her supervisor to up my date and give me the $100 off.
They did.
My new i700 is being shipped overnight for free for $499.
Congratulations on your purchase and welcome to the site! You had the same luck that I did. I was told I couldn't get NewEveryTwo because I was a month and half early, but after kindly asking they agreed. It makes the i700 an even better deal.
The specs say that it has GPSOne. When GPS is activated are data/voice minutes being used?
I believe the GPS your asking about is the GPS for E911 and location services. It would not charge you data or voice minutes. But this does bring up an interesting question. Does anyone work with the location based services and can tell us how they work? Like does the phone constatly transmit the information or does it pick it up when it is quried or what?
Yes, exactly. So for example can I use a thick client navigation program on the phone and have it provide audible directions as I'm driving down the road with no additional airtime minutes being used?
You could if the GPS were supported by any navigation software, which so far it isn't. Samsung hasn't exactly been cooperative with providing internal information about the i700. More like they are building a vault around it.
What you describe is exactly the way I use my XDA. I have a GPS connected to it through the sync port, and the software provides onscreen and audible navigation as I drive. The cool part is that it totally integrates with the phone and Media Player... so I can here the music, have the voice navigation step in when needed... and if I get a phone call, it mutes the other two until the call is over automagically. It's awesome.
THAT'S why I am trying to get an answer on whether the i700 allows serial I/O.
The GPS service referred to by cell phone companies is a system that allows emergency response teams to locate you when you call 911. It is server-side and uses some sort of triangulation between cell towers (that's my understanding anyway). From what I've read, it locates you within 100 yards to .5 mile or so. The service is not pinpoint and doesn't update in realtime (there is a considerable lag). This makes it usefull for an ambulance to know basically where you are lying in the middle of the road injured, but makes the use of the service for mapping/direction applications pretty much useless.
