This is the official thread for discussion of the iOS 4.1.x betas. About two weeks ago, Apple released the first beta of 4.1. Late yesterday, Apple released the second beta of 4.1. Let us know whether you have tried either of these betas (or any subsequent 4.1 betas).
I installed the first 4.1 beta shortly after it was released. It is most definitely a beta--buggy as all get out. In fact, it is one of the worst iOS betas I have tried. It's hard for me to describe why other than to say my
iPhone gets wacky at times. The brightness changes for no apparent reason. The screen goes black for no apparent reason. Yesterday, whenever I made a call, the person on the other line couldn't hear me, but the person on the other line could hear me if they initiated the call to me.
Supposedly, the two big "features" of 4.1 are the addition of the Game Center, which appeared in the 4.0 beta but never made it to the gold master release, and some additional Bluetooth features (e.g., being able to use BT to fastforward and rewinder). I haven't played with either of these features yet. I can tell you that the first beta of 4.1 did NOT fix the proximity sensor problem, but some folks are reporting that the second beta does (though others are saying the second beta does not fix the proximity sensor problem).
I have not yet installed the second 4.1 beta. I am frustrated that the first beta removed the ability to set a custom ringtone for a contact, and the bugginess has driven me a bit batty. Thus, I don't know whether I will install the second beta or revert back to 4.0.1.
If you are running the second beta, please let us know what you think. I personally would like to know whether it: (a) adds back the ability to use custom ringtones for contacts, and (b) fixes the proximity sensor issue.
