Question RUMORS: iPhone on Verizon

I just happened to be chatting with two people in my office this morning and they both said they have heard from separate sources that the iPhone (or a new version of it) will be coming to Verizon Wireless in January 2010. Neither of the people is a technogeek, and neither follows the various iPhone websites. However, one of my employees is buddies with a VZW store manager. The other happened to be in a Verizon store within the past couple of weeks. Apparently, VZW employees are telling folks that the iPhone will be available for VZW's network in January 2010. When I questions my co-employees as to how this could be given the exclusivity contract Apple has with AT&T, the employee who is friends with the VZW store manager said that Apple will be making a different model of the iPhone.

I am taking these rumors with a grain of salt--at least for now. However, I figured I would start this rumor thread so we could trade stories/rumors of an iPhone release for VZW.

Well, moments after I created this thread, I found this article on 9to5Mac, which reports on a rumor that Apple is testing a CMDA iPhone on the VZW 4G LTE network.

I'm still not believing the hype--yet (though, I'm hoping it's true because I miss VZW's coverage).

I just dropped Verizon for a two year contract with AT&T. I hope my timing wasn't bad. If I had heard that rumor I might have waited.

If I had to, I would be an ETF with AT&T, but I wouldn't be thrilled about having to buy a new iPhone just to get CDMA coverage.

I would drop my att iphone, pay the fee, and save money using verizon's version of the iphone. I'm using a black Berry Tour on verizon for work so I would probably merg the plans.

Now that I'm over my initial response to this rumor, I'm going back to my speculation that we'll see an iPhone on Verizon in about 2 years, once LTE is fully implemented. Does anyone know if Verizon's LTE and AT&T's LTE systems will be fully compatible with each other?

I thought VZW's LTE will be data only, not voice?

Given the VzW attack of iPhone/AT&T lately ("There's a Map for that" and "iDon't" ads), it would not appear VzW and Apple are about to jump in bed together. I doubt Apple has changed their stance on letting VzW cripple their phones---I would think VzW would have to change. I excitedly await the possibility, but I'm not holding my breath. Lets see how the new Android phone does for VzW (the Droid).

There is no way the iPhone is coming to Verizon anytime soon and honestly no point. AT&T wouldn't be spending money upgrading to handle MMS and Tethering if Verizon was going to have an iPhone soon.

NOT TO MENTION this Android phone that is coming out next month.. Have you seen the commercials? Why would they be targeting the iPhone if it was coming to Verizon two months later?

I completely agree with you. One of the best things about the iPhone is its awesome screen and ability to serve as a portable TV screen. I often have played a movie or TV show on the iPhone to keep my kids entertained. Reducing the screen size would certainly detract from the allure of the iPhone.

I hope the rumor of the iPhone coming to Verizon next year is true, but I also hope the rumor of the smaller screen size is not true.

perhaps it's an Apple work around for getting a product on the verizon network due to their contract w/ AT&T

These rumors have been surfacing for a while. I will believe it when I see it. I would think that if the phone was coming in January, there would be reports of it being seen in the wild, as the testing team would be out and about insuring compatibility with the network and good usage before rolling it out. Also why wouldn't they push it up a month for the holiday season?

I have a friend that works for Verizon Marketing... and he was over the other day and confirmed the Q3 2010 rumor.. he was pretty excited to tell me because he knows I follow this stuff. and he knows its been leaked through other sources as well. So it was more just a confirmation. Of course the timing could change but the release is confirmed!

Hmmm...this presents an interesting development for those of us who rushed out to buy the iPhone 3G and whose contracts with AT&T are due to expire in June/July/August 2010. Normally, I would be tempted to upgrade my iPhone then (in fact, my wife's line is eligible for an upgrade in March 2010 and I was planning on getting her a 3GS then). However, if the iPhone truly is going to VZW in the third quarter 2010, I'll not want to renew with AT&T so that I can jump ship and go back to VZW when the VZW iPhone is released a few months later. Decisions, decisions, decision....

Jay...
Sorry to make your life so complicated... I doubt I will go the way of the iPhone.. to hard to do IT support with it. But I'll keep ya posted if I hear anything else!

Thanks, Mark. I figure an awful lot can happen between now and March so we'll have to see what additional rumors surface.

Speaking as a long time smartphone user....

While I agree that AT&T needs to tighten up on there 3g coverage area (bad wireless provider - lol), they get the nod on technology in my book.
I have previously owned quite a few WM devices and while they all multitasked none of them did it very well. Additionally, none of them truly multitasked with an app requiring data access because of Verizon's data/call in progress limitations.

To be honest even if an iPhone came to Verizon that wouldn't move me to back to them. I have good 3g coverage in all the areas I routinely travel and frequent, but the deal breaker is I have become used to being able to look up movies, places to eat, or things to do while I talk to my girlfriend from my vehicle or on the go. This is what would be able to do if I was at home and therefore makes me feel that I'm truly getting something done on the go like I would from home. This alone would be difficult to give up.

This does not take into account I'm paying less than I was with verizon and can do more since AT&T doesn't have my iphone locked down and charging me for every little thing like verizon was doing to me. I had unlimited plans with both... at&t is $35 less a month for me but I will admit the only thing I'm not doing is tethering. The iphone is so good though that I don't mind browsing on it.

my 2 cents...

Tom
