Hey guys, I just moved to the S last Friday after I got the white screen of death Friday afternoon. I loved JBing but I could swear that the phone slows down, although I just install a couple of things that I love, Intelli, ireal and such. I dont even install themes anymore.
Question, how is your JB on S, is it reliable? does it slow the phone at all?
Thanks guys.

It's fine, no major issues. Occassional hiccups but that is to be expected.

I always used 5 icon dock....so I figured might as well use 5 column too....you should try it....it works nicely.

Ditto what you say.....a few quirks as can be expected. Perhaps a slight speed loss, but hardly attributable to JB....more likely the number of apps.

purplera1n is THE way to go. It's the easiest JB I have ever done. I have loaded all my apps, and everything is fast as can be, and no problems at all.

I waited to sell my 3G and get the 3GS until I was sure that I wasn't giving up anything. It's there now. With 3G Unrestrictor available, I can even Sling over 3g or even on Edge.

I sooo much wish they would jailbreak 3.1! I forgot the sacrifices we early adopters sometimes must make.

I would highly doubt that you will see any jailbreak offered for 3.1 until it is actually released. The dev team or George Hotz may have one ready to go, but I haven't seen them actually release any JB until the OS goes live.

That's pretty much what I figured. I can't wait to get jailbroken so I can get 3G Unrestrictor and Sling over the 3G network.

Having moved over to the iPhone after they came out with 3gs, I went straight to jailbreaking. Works fine EXCEPT Skype won't work on a jailbroken phone! (At least that is what my Skype app said when I tried to start it). Can anyone else reproduce this? Are there other apps that won't work?

Skype works fine over wifi. Skype will also work fine when you install 3G Unrestrictor.

Also - what did you use to jailbreak? Make sure it was purplera1n RC2.

Not unless you want to use Skype!

You need to re-jailbreak with RC2.

hmmm...when I went to the purplera1n site, the only download option was version 1.0. Do you know where I can get rc2?

I would guess that is the latest. The link below is GEOHOT's blog.

I guess you can unlock your phone at the push of a button in cydia..... Just add GeoHot's source and install. The source is below:

He is not talking about unlocking - he is talking about jailbreaking. They are two entirely seperate things. If you are on ATT, then do NOT unlock your phone!!!!

If you go to purplera1n.com, there are two icons - one for Windows, another for Mac. You may need to refresh your browser. But, the link, when clicked, will indeed allow you to download the correct version.

Sorry....I was reading geohot's blog. My last post was an oh by the way you can unlock your iPhone just as easily too. That was definitely not clear. I hope nobody inadvertently unlocked their phone, but from the sounds of it all you have to do is uninstall purplesn0w.

It sounds like purplesn0w will come in handy when traveling. It is something that you can basically turn off and on according to geohot.

For the record: purplera1n equals jailbreak and purplesn0w equals unlock.

Tim,

I have a 3G iPhone on AT$T and I have JBed and unlocked my iPhone.
What issues are you talking about?

What issues are you talking about?
Freddie was just stating that there were no options or names for the files at purplera1n, and he was concerned that he might not be getting the most up to date file....version 1, rc2, or rc2a.....I assumed that the files are just replaced on the website with the most recent version....but you know what happens when you assume.

Tim was just making it clear that Freddie wanted to JB using purplera1n not unlock his phone.

Did you use purplesn0w to unlock? It sounds like purplesn0w is the way to go as it only updates the com file and does not mess with the base band.....Occam's razor comes to mind.

How often do you unlock it, or is it constantly unlocked? How often do you switch SIMs?
