Anyone use their iPhone with their iPod ready car stereo?
When I do finally get around to picking up an iPhone (waiting out current contract) I'd like to use it with an Alpine car stereo. I assume it will work the same as using a regular iPod in there. I hope.
Anyone?

It should work for playback, but it may not charge the iPhone. The new iPhone did away with Firewire charging, so, depending on how your Alpine charges, it may or may not work with the 3G.
There is an in-line adapter mentioned in another thread. Basically, it's a car charger that allows a pass-through to another sync cable. So, you plug your stereo cable into the charger and the charger into the phone. Best of both worlds!
onlydarksets thanks for the head up... Looks like tsatryan has tested that out and the Ridax unit seems to work well... So if the deck I get doesn't support the charging feature also then I'll get that unit so I can charge in the car w/o tying up my power outlet for the phone!!!

Let me give you one tip here. If you connect the iPhone through the auxiliary cable, you will have also your phone calls through your car speakers and the iPhone picks up the voice ten times better that bluetooth. I purchased the Kensington cigarette car charger and it works amazing. Plus, I have the iPhone/ipod right close to me and change it quickly. Also, can make calls quickly. The car charger is just a charger and a convenient holder, therefore, even if you dont have this, you could use the hands free system.
I hope this helps. I have tried many ipod adapters, and to tell you the truth nothing works like the auxiliary for me.
My new headunit - the Kenwood DNX5120 - does all that from the touch screen. It is a double din unit. It works phenomenally with the iPhone3G. Just be sure if you install it that you also install the special bluetooth patch designed for it and the iPhone3G.
I just installed a Pioneer Avic F900BT double din GPS touchscreen into my vette and I must say having the ipod functions is amazing. It's all built in, from controlling my iphone, to watching videos and podcasts, to making phone calls over bluetooth using the radio to dial and receive calls.
Okay so I was at Best Buy today chatting with one of the installers and he told me that the Alpine rep informed him that to use the iPod portion of the iPhone you have to put your phone in flight mode... Thus not receiving your calls or text messages...
Can anyone confirm this?
Is this the case with your Kenwood deck tsatryan?
What about your Pioneer SpineDoc?

You don't have to put the Pioneer into airplane mode to access the ipod features. If what you say is true on the Alpine model that's a huge blunder.
I pretty much just connect my AV cable to the iPhone, my iPhone charges, and I control all my iPhone stuff including phone and ipod functions, ie: podcasts, video, audio, etc. on the Pioneer itself. I never have to touch the iPhone for any reason.
That Best Buy installer is an idiot. Most likely, when you connect the iPhone to the head unit, it will show a pop up message informing you that what you are connecting to was not designed for the iPhone, and asking you IF you want to go into Airplane mode. You don't have to. And, chances are, you won't hear any "GSM buzz" either. I don't. My Kenwood makes my iPhone show the Airplane mode pop-up, but it works fine.
I get the airplane mode pop up and of course I press no and everything is fine. But fair warning, the Pioneer buzzes A LOT! I fixed it by putting a static bag behind the iphone, and plan on getting one of those hard plastic backings made for reducing buzz and putting some ferrite cores on the audio outputs. But just to let you know there is definitely a buzz issue with the 3g and the Pioneer F900BT.
I see that this thread is kind of dead, but I came across it when researching this problem. I have a Pioneer system with the CD-IB200 iPod interface and I was experiencing the reported charging issues, but I just found this kit that fixes it perfectly. I got it from CableJive and it works great. I recommend anyone who is having this problem to check it out.
