3G iPhone Fits in ProClip for 80GB Video iPod (5G)
Well, the title of this thread pretty much says it all. I've been meaning to post this for nearly a week now and keep forgetting. I discovered that my 3G iPhone fits very nicely into the ProClip mount I've been using for my 80GB video iPod.
Now, if I can only get my hardwired iPod adapter to work with the iPhone, I'd be rocking. Unfortunately, the adapter seems incompatible with the iPhone and won't even charge it. I'm using an adapter made by Group 47 for the Lexus stereo system.

Charging on the iPhone3G is different than any previous iPhone/iPod product. Previously, the charging could pass through the firewire pinning. This is blocked on the new iPhone3G, so most (not all) previous charging methods not made by Apple will not work. The iPhone3G will ONLY accept charging through pinning for the USB.
Here is a way to remedy this situation.
Available now is the KENSINGTON 4 IN 1 CAR CHARGER-USA
You can see it here - Apple Store (U.S.) - Kensington 4-in-1 Car Charger for iPod
Although it says it is made for the iPod, I have this product, and you can use it to successfully charge the iPhone3G.
I think the difference between the products you reference and the one that Pastor Tim references is that the Kensington has a passthrough, which allows one to use an existing iPod device (such as my hardwired iPod adapter) with the 3G iPhone, whereas the cables you reference are just plain old straight USB cables. Also, buy.com no longer carries the first item listed in your post.

I will be picking up one of these as soon as it is available.
Tim, did I accurately describe how the Kensington works? if so, I'll be looking for one at the Apple store on Monday when I go there to return a case I bought for my wife and to have them look at my iPhone. I spent $300 to $400 to have my car hardwired for my iPod so it will be nice to be able to use the hardwire kit with the 3G iPhone. My wife also has a relatively new (bought 6 months ago or less) Belkin FM transmitter that says it is incompatible with her 3G iPhone so maybe the Kensington will solve that problem (although she'll end up having two devices plugged into her cigarette lighter instead of one). I wonder why Apple killed the firewire plugs on the 3G. . . .

Jay, my car is the same. I have a unit installed that directly connects to the premium system in my car. I just plug in my iPod, or my iPhone, with the cable to the iPod jack on the bottom, and hear flawless music. This cable also charges my iPod and my 1st gen iPhone. It will still play music with my new iPhone3G, but will not charge it. That means that I will hear great music until the iPhone dies an hour down the road! Not a great solution. The Kensington pass-through that I linked above works perfectly, allowing the music part to pass through to my head unit, and supplying the charging through its part. The small Ridax that I linked to will do the same thing, but in a far more compact solution, actually taking the charge from the existing wiring I have, and converting it to the proper voltage and pinning accepted by the new iPhone.
Thanks for the clarification. I look forward to your report on the Ridax.

I try not to limit my comments to threads I actually read first.

LOL. I've got to remember that line for the next time I do something like that.

Well, a qualified "yes." I have received the product, and tried it out on an iHome clock radio that I have, and it works perfectly.
However, I say "qualified" because I no longer have the Lexus that I owned when I ordered the ridax. The Lexus was rather "permanently customized" about a month ago, and I now have a Cadillac Escalade. I have replaced the stock Bose system in the Cadillac with a new Kenwood DNX5120, which offers AM/FM/XM/iPod/iPhone/USB/GarminGPS/Parrot Bluetooth all built in. It is a beautiful system, and does literally everything I wanted. And - to top it off - it does the charging thing correctly, so it doesn't need the ridax coupler!
So - if someone is looking to purchase one, I am not in desperate need of the two that I ordered, as my current car no longer requires one.
PS - attached are two photos - one of my "customization" on the Lexus LX470, and the other of the Kenwood DNX5120, which I highly recommend.
Thanks Mark. I am fine. How it happened... I was en route to the airport to fly to Florida to teach at a conference. On DE141 (a limited access highway) it seems that some elderly lady had a flat tire, and decided to literally park her car in the left lane. No lights on. No flashers. Fortunately she actually left the vehicle. I came around a turn and over a slight rise, and there she sat. There was no time at all to do anything, and there was another vehicle passing me on the right side. As a testament to the safety of the Lexus, I walked out of the vehicle with nothing more than an abrasion on my right hand from the air bag going off. I quickly ran up to the other vehicle, believing at that time that there was someone in the car and in trouble. I still can't comprehend why the person didn't pull over to the side. They actually told the police they were going to change the tire - right there on the highway. If I had been a minute earlier, nothing would have happened. If I had been a few minutes later, and they were actually changing the tire... well, I don't even want to think about that.
Anyhow... I used to have a Lexus LS, and traded it for the LX a couple years ago. I won't miss having a 4x4 because the Cadillac Escalade is a 4x4. This is the first "American" vehicle I have had in years. I hope I won't be disappointed! So far, so good!
tsatryan thanks for the update... Sounds like if the Alpine system that I'm planning on using won't charge it I can use this as a solution to handle both in car charging and pass through for music and still control the iPhone from the deck!!!

That sounded like one lucky accident. I can't help but wonder though, how does a pastor afford the big Lexus and now an Escalade? Is that a part time job?

Interesting that you would wonder that. Not that it's any of your business, but I afford it the same way as anyone else would. I am a trained professional with years of experience and a tremendous amount of responsibilities, for which I am compensated accordingly. To answer your second question, I am quite full-time as a pastor, and have been since 1980.

I was thinking of trying the Ridax myself but hadn't gotten around to ordering one (actually, I didn't even realize they were now available for purchase). So, if you're still looking to sell one of yours, let me know and I'll buy it from you.
