Jay, are you leaving your data turned off during that time period ... 3G and WiFi? I basically don't give myself a chance to get to the point of running low because I'm either around my desk or in my car and have an umbilical cord to get some juice in both places. I can see this being a big issue for a real traveler though. Hopefully I don't have to experience that because I do hate to travel.

On another note... we've talked about making this thread more of an "extended road test" kind of thing. I am thinking we change the name of the thread to something like that and start to expand the discussion... and maybe summarize some of the highlights in the first post. You up for that?

Nope, I'm not messing with the data (at least not much). 3G is always on, as is Bluetooth. WiFi is almost always off. The only time I turn WiFi on is when I go to sync my eWallet with my PC (less than once a week) and on those rare occasions when I am at a WiFi hotspot.

I've changed the title of the thread. Let's see how it goes.

Observation about Push e-mail

Last week, I happened to actually go on vacation. For once in my converged life, I actually turned Push e-mail off so I could enjoy the time with my family and not be disrupted every 5-10 minutes or with a new e-mail. I subsequently observed that I seemed to be getting noticeably more life out of my iPhone's battery. So, over the past couple of days, I decided to actually check the usage stats. Here is what I have for the first test:
  • Usage 3 Hours, 49 minutes
  • Standby 2 Days, 0 Hours
  • Current period talk time 1 hour, 57 minutes
  • Data sent 389 KB
  • Data received 5.4MB
I currently still have 14% of my batteyr left and might be able to make it through the rest of the work day without a charge (but I don't want to chance that so I will be charging my iPhone shortly).

At first plush, those stats might not indicate much more battery life. However, the nearly 2 hours of talk time this battery cycle are, I believe, a little greater usage for me than normal.

One other thing that is different from my prior tests: I am running firmware 3.0 beta 5. After the final version of 3.0 is released next week, I might run some more tests.
