I cannot believe that the USB and car chargers were not designed to adequately charge this phone. This is the first device I have ever owned with this issue - and I've owned a lot. With the i730, battery life was never an issue and I used it a lot, including wifi, broadband to watch movies over orb, etc. Even when I'd get low, I could at least plug it into a USB port and it would ADD charge, not continue leaking it away. Very lame! I'm not happy with this issue at all! Samsung should provide a second AC adapter to make up for poor design engineering. A failure in my not so humble opinion...

Hmmm, do I feel any better..... nope... Off to spend another $20 for an AC adapter... Grrrrrr

Basically, to charge in a car, you do need a special adapter but otherwise, with the Samsung USB connector, you can charge on almost any computer. I haven't tried to charge while using WiFi but otherwise, I do find the USB connector supplied with the phone does recharge my phone.
I have the official Vzw car charger and I'm able to tool down the highway with the screen on its very brightest setting using Garmin XT and seem to be able to maintain a full charge.
You might not want a cooked ROM on your phone but I also find Adrynalyne's v1.7 ROM makes a marked difference in battery life.
I actually carry a spare battery or two when I need it and prefer to charge my batteries via the Vzw AC adapter as I think the car charger and a USB connection tend to charge the battery too fast - also the phone gets hot sitting around on a USB connection-not good for long-term battery life, probably because the processor is cooking away.
So maybe it's one of those YMMV things. With Adrynalyne's ROM, I didn't bother doing the regedits Ninja4Hire described in Tips & Tricks but this link summarizes some of the standard tricks for saving juice before the new ROM's appeared:

Think there was a lot of good discussion in a thread entitled "how long does your battery last" but I've written way too much already.
EDIT: Duh! That's the thread I'm in! Amazing.
