You don't have to put the Pioneer into airplane mode to access the ipod features. If what you say is true on the Alpine model that's a huge blunder.
I pretty much just connect my AV cable to the iphone, my iphone charges, and I control all my iphone stuff including phone and ipod functions, ie: podcasts, video, audio, etc. on the Pioneer itself. I never have to touch the iphone for any reason.
