I'll add a couple more not reviewed...
PocketNav is much like Vbar, but I think the UI is a little nicer, and it's free. Very slim memory requirements, and after using it for a few months, have found it works 100%. It's the one I have kept using since discovering it.
GigaTask is another one I've used a lot. It's far more powerful than I needed, but still with a small footprint. It is very configurable and has a lot of power beyond just task management, such as launching programs and manipulating system settings.
I might have to take a look at Magic Button, because I like the idea of icons much better than a pull-down menu. You mentioned something about interfering with the voice mail icon though? Does it take over the entire top bar?
