While I don't have a BlackBerry, I have been doing a bit or reading, since I might switch platforms. From what I understand you can only sync Calendar , Contact, and Tasks OTA (Over The Air) when using BES (Corporate) and not when using BIS (Personal) data service. There are some services that will give you BES for an additional monthly subscription.
