When I got the 700p, and then the Centro, I had specific things I wanted for ringtones for different people, so I used a program called Audacity (Google it) to pull in the mp3 or wav I wanted and then trimmed it down to what I wanted and exported the result as a wav file to be emailed/synced/carded to my phone.
