Graffiti 2

Anybody using the standard Graffiti and who has gotten their 7135 firmware upgraded to MZ1.0.44 and SZ 1.0.29 has been confronted with a new version of Graffiti called Graffiti 2. The reason for this change has to do with a licensing problem with the original version. Graffiti 2 comes from CIC, the makers of Jot, so it has a lot of similarities.

There is definitely a learning curve to the new input and some people are having a tough time adapting. While some characters got easier, others got more difficult. This FAQ is intended to help those using Graffiti 2 to learn how to use it.

Things that are easier with Graffiti 2:

1) Capital letters do not require the shift stroke, Just write the letter across the division of the two sides of the Graffiti area.
2) Some characters now only require one stroke without the punctuation shift, these include "@", "(", ")", ".", "&" and more.
3) Most Special Characters are drawn just like they look, for example "#", "%", "$", ":", ";", etc. They are easier to remember. These require a punctuation shift before and after the character.
4) Some characters have alternative strokes that can make it easier for some people to write accurately.
5) Accented characters are easier. You write the character and then quickly write the accent in the number area. Takes some practice.
6) Some letters or characters that were hard to write consistently are now easier. I had problems with "G" and "Q".
7) You can now write in the graffiti area while the keyboard utility is running. This gives you the flexibility to write and tap without switching back and forth.
Cut, copy, paste and undo are one stroke.

Things that are harder with Graffiti 2:

1) Some common letters now require 2 strokes to write. The most used are probably "t", "i" and "k". "i" seems to be the most frustrating for users.
2) Special characters now require not only a punctuation shift stroke to start them but also a punctuation stroke to end them. This causes some characters to take up to 6 strokes to make. A way around this is to create shortcuts for the characters you use often. This will let you reduce them down to two strokes. Shortcuts are created in the PDA Prefs app.
3) Some letters or characters that were easy to write consistently are now harder. I had problems with "E" and "H". There are alternatives though. Many letters are easier to write in the lower case version listed in the Jot charts below.

Other Resources

Palm has a page dedicated to Graffiti input at www.palmone.com/us/products/input/graffiti2.html. There is even an online practice tool but it doesn't let you try all characters.

Graffiti 2 Charts

Below are the Graffiti 2 charts from Palm and Jot. Note in the Jot charts that there are alternatives for writing many characters. You can usually find one that makes characters that cause you trouble easier. Remember that you can get to the Graffiti chart on the 7135 by doing /g while in any app where you can enter text.

Charts from Jot (note that not all strokes work on the 7135, most lower case versions of letters work.):
