Let me rephrase, yes you need a data plan if you want to use data. No you don't have to have a plan to own and use the phone and pda features. Yes you can get a pay as you go plan and never actually USE data but have access to it for a nice price that I recommend you never take advantage of else you will quickly see your bill go through the roof.

I specifically asked about this talking to telesales. First, when you order on the web there's only one choice of plan, and it's the unlimited data plan. The telesales person told me that when I go to activate the phone (should be tomorrow), I can change that to pay as you go. She offered to put a note in my account stating I didn't want the data plan, in case it didn't work during activation, but I figured I'd make sure the activation worked.
