If memory serves, FAT16 (a.k.a. FAT) has a 2GB file size, and 4GB volume size, limit. FAT32 has a 32GB file size, and 2TB volume size, limit. So switching to FAT will not get you more than 4GB in any case...I suppose there's an oddball chance it could get you the first 4GB of your 6GB card, though I would have no explanation as to why that might happen.
Beyond that, FAT performs significantly slower and is much less efficient than FAT32. Generally, FAT uses 32K per block of storage, so thats the minimum file size you can have even if your word doc or whatnot only has 4 bytes of actual data in it. FAT32 uses 4K blocks.
