old hourly employee in the store, I have had 45 year old Regional Mgrs
lie right to my face. Lying doesn't have anything to do with capitalism
or marketing firing on all cylinders - it has to do with lack of character.
I don't lie to my customers and VZW doesn't need to lie to me.
My hands aren't shaking to get the phone, they can put it out whenever.
I have a like new 6700 running a great WM6 rom and it works fine.

Quite simply... it's human nature
Everyone likes to be helpful or to appear knowledgable... or both. Everyone is asking about a handset... the company has made no official comments other than 4th Q but will that stop managers and clerks or anyone else that is getting badgered for info... or just trying to be helpful? It's just people talking... like they always do... but do you think that the company endorsed or condoned their input?
I do not...
Quite simply #2 This is a new day and age... before the net maybe a magazine would mention a new handset that was coming down the pipe but he would never give a day unless the company gave one. Now with the net and FCC leaks we are so far ahead of the curve that we get blood thirsty for our next toy/tool FAR AHEAD of realistic release date.
I might be wrong but my experience thus far has been that Verizon is waiting until the unit is right... that is the main reason we are still waiting for the phone... which makes it HTC's fault (if we must go there) that we do not have it.
Quite simply #3 This is what I would call premature anticipation
