I wonder if the "class" matters. I saw on this newegg page that there were some class 6 devices out there, and noticed the one I got was a class 4. Maybe there is something with that causing problems for people.

The class number shouldn't matter as that just defines how fast the card is...like computer memory, the card will only work as fast as the memory interface in the phone. Not sure what the spec is on the microSD port is...
