Actually, the device-makers are on our side. But as you know, the problem is this: We are not their customers.
As a result, we don't get the products the vendors could make. We get what the networks will let them make.
Especially for CDMA, the current landscape--with carriers calling the shots--results in a David Letterman-style list of offenses:
1. fewer mfgrs
2. lower tech
3. limited innovation
4. fewer model choices
5. longer design cycles
6. crippled feature-sets
7. carrier-supplied bloatware
8. activation restrictions
9. higher prices
10. lower quality support
