This is a terrific hack - thank you for putting the time into figuring this out.

My two comments:
1. Because I have the Q, which doesn't have touch screen, it was easier for me to figure out where the Windows folder is (by going to tools/options and unchecking correct box to unhide system folders. Otherwise, the directions on cutting and pasting don't work correctly (for novice users anyway, I think they could get lost).
2. I too had to make sure the file was correctly named. without looking at the details, it looked correct - sync.ico. but i mistakenly had named it sync.ico.ico. After fixing this, it worked perfectly and I now have the nice picture of the Moto Q (though its branded Verizon and mine is unbranded - not a big deal and easy to fix later with photoshop.)
