Make sure your i730 isn't trying to dial out while connected. I am using PDANet and I have ZERO issues staying connected. What it sounds like is that your i730 is trying to connect to Verizon to either sync your mail, or pull information (like weather apps), and this can disconnect PDANet.
Make sure you have anything that tries to get to the outside world disabled before tethering...
