Vista Windows Mobile Device Center - Change Smartphone Picture

Well I watched one of the presentation on the launch of Windows Mobile 6 and saw that they were using Windows Mobile Device center under Vista, and on the Windows Mobile Device Center main screen, they replaced the default image with one of the device (stylized the same way in that cartoonish way).

I want the i730 on my Mobile Device Center, so a hacking I went, and a way I found...

First I did some research and EVERYWHERE I looked it says that it is an OEM option to change the image, and no where did it list where and how the image needed to be changed. Next I started digging through the files directories trying to find the install location of Mobile Device Center, thinking it might just be an image file or icon file. Of course Vista changed the location of the installed files, trying to make it harder for the average person to mess with "important" files that they shouldn't be deleting or changing.

Needless to say I found the file I needed. It's called sync.ico, and it's located at:

c:\users\(your username)\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\ActiveSync\Profiles\(your profile key)\

I then edited the ICON file (ICO) and added an i730 image I pulled from the web (yes it still has WM2003 on it). I copied it to the location, rebooted the computer, and bang, had my own custom graphic in replacement on the generic graphic. (See image below).

I will be uploading a copy of the ICON file shortly, so those of you with Vista can have your i730 image show up for the Windows Mobile Device Center when you sync with your i730.

Now as a side note, if you have multiple devices you are syncing, you need to find the one with the right profile key in the Profiles directory. This is so it will show up only with the i730, and not with another device. Of course if you ONLY sync with one device, it will only have one profile listed.

Here is the example of what it looks like:

Here is another image icon I made, this time with it open:
