A couple of things here. One: A quicker way to do this is to use the Resco file explorer and set it to Show Hidden Files. Under Windows in the phone look for a file called AdminSettings.exe. Make a shortcut to it and put it in your Start Menu. This will save you from dialing the numbers above everytime you want to change it.

Second: I found that if you live in good 3G coverage, just the opposite will save your battery life as well. If you put it on HSDPA mode only (no GSM), it seems to have the same effect that the GSM Only mode does on the battery. I live in good coverage and only have to charge every couple of days now with moderate usage. If you move out of a 3G area then you simply change it back using your AdminSettings.exe shortcut. Takes about 10 seconds.
