It appears loading the phone up without any of the customizations, except for the ring tones, and making a few manual registry hacks causes it to run much smoother, and a lot more memory available. For those of you who don't use some of these services like wireless sync (which is the verizon product, not activesync), hard-resetting and skipping all this will do you a wealth of good.
