Basically they are allowing you to retrieve mail (POP) if you are external to the firewall, but if you want to send mail, you need to use another SMTP service besides theirs, and one that allows SMTP relay, so the message you are sending through the server looks as if it is coming from your College email address. Personally I use my Comcast email server to do this.

Example:

For POP my setting is: pop.mydomainname.com
For SMTP my setting is: smtp.comcast.net

Also the free MSN accounts do not allow mail relay, so you may not ever see the test message you sent.
yea I can recieve the e-mails but when I try to send one it comes back saving "invalid e-mail address" or something. So idk what to do, my schools technican said that I should use the stmp setting from the internet that I use @ home, but thats road runner and I don't know the SMTP setting for road runner or Time Warner Cable
