Like Mike already said, L is nice, but far from a requirement for good photos. I took some great photos long before i made the jump to some entry level L glass.

There's also some non-L lenses out there that take spectacular photos for a fraction of the price. one example would be the 85mm f/1.8. A great resource for lens reviews that helped me out alot has been www.fredmiranda.com
