***This is not completely compatible with WM5, but will work in certain situations. Use this tip with that in mind. I have e-mailed the developer to release a WM5 ver, but have not heard back.***
When I used to run PPC 2002, 2003 and older, there was a small app called No Plug-ins Today by ictinus. I tracked it down, and found the url.
http://www.ictinus.com/NoPluginsToday/
It's main purpose is to remove all today plugins from the today screen...It really enhances battery life, and cleans up the screen nicely.
I loaded it, assigned it to a soft button using a registry tweak program, and it worked...mostly. The calendar did not disappear. There mist be some sort of discrepancy in registry data from 2002, 2003, and WM5. All of my other plugins did disappear, however. As a work-around, I purchased SPB Diary, and integrated it as a plug-in into SPB Pocket Plus. When SPB disappeared, so did the offending bit of the calendar. This may work with other today replacements, Snoopsoft, etc...but I do not know. See screen-shots below for an idea.
This tweak greatly increases battery life. With no use, the phone will last 3 or more days!!!!!!
Best of luck.
