If I do NOT use Exchange Server, can I still get this 2000 SMS allotment and use it with regular text messages? Or does it somehow "know" the difference?

If it doesn't recognize the difference, why would anyone choose to pay for any of the plans if they get the 2000 for free? Is this just a quirk in the system?
